Staying in Carolina
The Panthers signed Matthews to a reserve/future contract Monday, Darin Gantt of the team's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Matthews was signed to the Panthers' active roster Nov. 7 and was waived by the team six days later. He played 19 snaps on special teams in Week 10 against the Bears for his only appearance of the season. Latest Fantasy Rumors
Could earn snaps at tight end
Matthews might have a shot at earning playing time following his positional change to a tight end, according to Matt Barrows of The Athletic.
ANALYSIS
Matthews spent his entire career as a wide receiver before converting to tight end a few months ago, but his big, strong frame (6-foot-3, 215) with long arms and big hands could fit the position extremely well. The 29-year-old never was considered a speedy receiver, but he can be a large target and is a good blocker as well. He seems to be someone worth watching in training camp, especially if he adds a bit more muscle between now and the start of the season.

When Matthews signed a one-year contract with San Francisco in March, it appeared the veteran had a good shot at replacing Pierre Garcon as a starting outside option. The NFL Draft changed those prospects, as two high-round picks were added to the competition, bumping Matthews from potential starter to competing for a roster spot. The 26-year-old is only a couple seasons removed from fantasy relevant campaigns, so there is some upside if he's able to overcome the odds and land a starting gig out of camp.
