David Starr

Starr made a dozen starts between the JD Motorsports and SS Green Light Racing teams. The veteran driver picked up four Top-20 finishes in those starts and raced competitively for the most part. Starr's 2021 schedule has not been announced at the time of this writing, but he's likely looking at a similar, part-time schedule again in 2021. It could be split between race teams.

The 22-year NASCAR veteran is confirmed to be returning to Jimmy Means Racing. The search for sponsors continues for this small, underfunded operation, but they plan to race full-time again in 2020. The 52-year-old veteran from Texas raced to just five Top-20 finishes last season vs. nine DNF's. The average finish came in around a lofty 26.0 for the season. Those are nearly identical numbers to what Starr posted in 2018 in this same car. The trend line is set and it remains pretty flat. There's only so much this veteran driver can do with this small race team and limited resources.

While it's not been confirmed at the time of this writing, it's expected that Starr will return to Jimmy Means Racing in 2019 for a second season of racing in the No. 52 Chevrolet. The 51-year-old veteran started the full schedule for this team last season, racking up seven Top-20 finishes and registering 23rd in the final driver standings. This has been a pretty typical level of performance for Starr over the last few seasons. He's registered 22nd-, 25th- and 23rd-place points finishes since 2016. It should be more of the same in the new campaign. We see little changing with this driver and team and we would expect Tim Brown to return as crew chief.

As of this writing we have no official confirmation that Starr and the No. 99 team will return in 2018, but it's our guess that he'll be back for one more season with the team. The 50-year-old Texan did a respectable job racing for this team in 2017. Star grabbed one Top-5 and five Top-20 finishes with this team last season. The 25th-place finish in the final driver standings was a good indicator of the season's work. Starr has almost 450-combined starts of experience between the Camping World Truck Series and Xfinity Series since 1998. It's that experience that makes him a good competitor for this small race team. - February Update - Starr has signed to drive the No. 52 Chevrolet for Jimmy Means Racing in the full schedule.

Starr is entering the last season of a three-year contract with Tri Star Motorsports. He is a 16-season veteran of the Camping World Truck Series and 10-season vet of the Xfinity Series. Between the two divisions of NASCAR, he’s racked up close to 400 starts of experience. While most of his accomplishments and accolades are in the truck series, he’s just now transitioning into full-time in the Xfinity Series at the age of 47. Last season Starr only pulled in one Top-10 finish (Daytona) and 11 Top-20 finishes. He’ll be paired with crew chief Greg Conner once again in the upcoming season and they’ll attempt to push the bar higher. It would seem that Starr’s best years of racing a fading in the rear view mirror and he’s just managing to be somewhat competitive with this team at this point.

The 15-year veteran should return to this small team in 2013 with his personal sponsor Zachry Construction in tow. Starr made 16 of the 22 races last year because this team’s budget became tight at mid-season. The veteran driver still has the potential to collect Top 10’s and race competitively, but the money problems of this small team limit his performance. If Arrington Racing can put some more money into the operation in the coming year, then improvement is possible. However, more corporate sponsorship needs to be found to make this happen.
