Polanco signed a contract Wednesday with the Giants.

The 30-year-old had been in negotiations with Japanese clubs since mid-December, and after weighing his options, he determined the Giants as the best spot to continue his career following eight seasons in Major League Baseball with the Pittsburgh Pirates. A once-prized prospect in the Pittsburgh organization who signed a five-year, $35 million contract in April 2016, Polanco saw his production at baseball's top level wane over the past three years before the Pirates released him in August.
