Knocked out for the first time since 2011 in the main event of PFL 3
Shields lost to Ray Cooper via TKO (punches) at 2:09 of Round 2 at PFL 3 on Thursday in Washington, DC.
ANALYSIS
At the start, it seemed like this was going to be another vintage Shields fight. He pulled guard, went to the clinch and went for takedowns. However, Cooper was able to defend the usual Shields' game. Cooper did great work as the two broke clinches and after stuffing takedowns. Shields suffered a cut early in the first round, and he continued to eat punishment. In the second round, Cooper jumped in with a lead hook that dropped Shields. He swarmed and continued to land strikes. It is hard to see how Shields is not nearing the end of his career after this performance.

Shields will take on Jon Fitch for the World Series of Fighting Welterweight Title at WSOF 34 on Nov. 12 in Loveland, Colorado, Dave Doyle of MMAFighting.com reports.

Shields ands Fitch were originally scheduled to throw down back in April, but a contract dispute between Shields and the promotion ultimately pushed back the bout. Now with a new deal, Shields will look to earn a belt in his fourth fight with the WSOF. He last fought professionally in August of 2015, suffering a controversial split-decision loss to Rousimar Palhares, who was suspended after the fight for holding his winning submission too long (aka "cranking"). Shields was more concerned about multiple eye pokes after that fight, and his response earned him an unsportsmanlike conduct suspension of his own. With all that in the past, Shields will now look to earn a belt against another former UFC product that matches up equally in terms of age, experience and measurements. It's an excellent matchup, though it will likely be overshadowed by UFC 205 in Madison Square Garden, which is set to air on the same night.
