Returning to Octagon in June
McGregor (lower leg) announced Sunday he will face Michael Chandler in a fight at UFC's June 29 event in Las Vegas, Alexander K. Lee of MMAFighting.com reports.

"The Notorious" hasn't been in the Octagon since suffering the lower leg injury against Dustin Poirier in July 2021, and his return has been pushed back multiple times over the past two years. McGregor re-entered UFC's anti-doping program in October after the USADA elected to no longer oversee the initiative, which simplified his return to action. McGregor lost to Poirier in his last two bouts and is looking for his first win since 2020, which came against Donald Cerrone. Chandler is also coming off a loss to Poirier in November 2022.

Since his mid-fight injury against Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 in July 2021, McGregor has undergone surgery, pushed his return back multiple times and coached a season of The Ultimate Fighter in preparation for a fight with Michael Chandler. Now, it is not out of the question to consider when exactly McGregor will return to the UFC octagon, what weight he will fight in (lightweight or welterweight) and who he will compete against (whether his opponent be Chandler or someone else).

It was under unique circumstances, however, as McGregor suffered a broken left leg during the fight after taking an awkward step back -- something he claims to have known was a risk entering the fight. While most fighters wouldn't dream of a title shot after losing three of their last four fights, this is McGregor after all, and it wouldn't be the least bit surprising to see him catapulted to another opportunity upon his return. If Poirier is able to emerge victorious in his upcoming matchup against Charles Oliveira, there's a case to be made for a trilogy fight given how the last bout ended. McGregor also has hinted at eventually completing his trilogy with Nate Diaz, while both Michael Chandler and Justin Gaethje have been hinted at as other prospective opponents. The Irishman claims to have two fights left on his UFC contract, so at the very least, it appears he intends to fight those out despite pulling in incredible amounts of income from his endeavors outside the cage.
