Retires following Holloway loss
FeatherweightUFC
August 26, 2023
Jung lost to Max Holloway via KO (punch) at 0:23 of Round 3 at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Singapore.
ANALYSIS
One of the most likable and well-respected guys in the sport, Jung predictably went out on his shield as a +500 underdog in what was his retirement bout. He engaged Holloway in a wild, back-and-forth brawl, landing his fair share of damage for as long as it lasted. It would eventually go on to win both men a $50,000 Fight of the Night bonus. Ultimately, however, one Max right hand dropped Jung on the spot, forcing referee Marc Goddard to immediately step in. Now 36 years of age, The Zombie has been a member of the UFC roster since March 2011. He picked up wins over the likes of Dustin Poirier, Frankie Edgar, and Dan Ige, and also faced names such as Jose Aldo, Brian Ortega, Yair Rodriguez, and Alexander Volkanovski. It would have been very interesting to see how Jung's career may have gone had he not sat out nearly four years from August 2013 to February 2017 due to mandatory military service in his native South Korea. Jung ended up fighting just nine times in the final decade of his career.

Set to return
FeatherweightUFC
June 15, 2023
Jung will take on Max Holloway in a featherweight fight at a UFC event in Singapore on Aug. 26, Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl reports Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Jung announced that he dislocated his shoulder back in December, but it appears he'll be good to go for the late-August fight. It'll be his first time in the octagon since April of 2022, when he was knocked out by former champion Alexander Volkanovski. His opponent Holloway, meanwhile, is coming off a much more recent victory in April. Despite the likely support of Asian MMA fans in Singapore, Jung stands to enter this fight as a significant underdog.
Discloses shoulder injury
FeatherweightUFC
December 28, 2022
Jung disclosed via his personal Instagram account back on Dec. 9 that he has suffered a dislocated shoulder and would not be able to compete at the proposed Feb. 4 event in South Korea. The UFC has since moved this event to the Apex Center in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
Jung had apparently been in negotiations about fighting on the Feb. 4 card in his home country since November, but he was also unsatisfied with who the UFC had originally proposed for his opponent. That turned out to be a moot point, however, as Jung suffered the shoulder injury a week later. The entire event was then moved to Las Vegas, and Jung will remain sidelined for an unforeseen amount of time.
No-shows title fight
FeatherweightUFC
April 9, 2022
Jung failed in his quest to become the UFC Featherweight Champion on Saturday, falling to Alexander Volkanovski via TKO (punches) at 0:45 of Round 4 at UFC 273 in Jacksonville.
ANALYSIS
The UFC originally intended to go with Max Holloway v. Volkanovski here, but they were forced to call an audible when Holloway was forced to withdraw due to injury. Jung received the opportunity despite the fact he was just 3-2 in his prior five fights, and he was predictably routed in a fight in which he entered as an overwhelming +500 underdog. Jung spent the duration of the fight serving as a punching bag for the champion. He had zero answers for the hand speed of Volkanovski, with the few punches he was able to land coming on wild counter strikes. The Zombie is ridiculously tough, as shown here, but he's 35 years of age now and has fought just seven times since August 2013 due to his mandatory military service in his native South Korea. There is an overwhelming chance this was his final opportunity at UFC gold.
Gets title shot
FeatherweightUFC
January 11, 2022
Jung will take on Alexander Volkanovski for the featherweight title at UFC 273 on April 9, MMA reporter Ariel Helwani reports.
ANALYSIS
Jung earned his title shot by winning three of his last four fights, most recently defeating Dan Ige by unanimous decision in June. His lone loss over that stretch came against Brian Ortega, whom Volkanovski defeated in his most recent title defense.
Facing 180-day medical suspension
FeatherweightUFC
June 22, 2021
Jung is facing a six-month medical suspension, MMAJunkie.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Jung was able to defeat Dan Ige by unanimous decision last Saturday to run his record in the UFC to 7-3. Jung will need clearance on a left shoulder injury, however, if he wants to fight before mid-December.
