Lawrence Pilut
24-Year-Old DefensemanD
2019 Fantasy Outlook
Pilut is expected to miss the first few weeks of the season after undergoing shoulder surgery in May, and he could well be relegated to the AHL after that given the depth Buffalo has amassed on the blue line. The 23-year-old Swede brings an average size profile at 5-foot-11 and 180 pounds, and nothing jumps out about the six points and minus-8 rating he posted in 33 games as a rookie last season. Factor in the injury, and it becomes safe to ignore Pilut on draft day. Read Past Outlooks

Pilut (illness) has signed a contract with Traktor Chelyabinsk of the KHL, Lance Lysowski of The Buffalo News reports.
ANALYSIS
Pilut appeared in just 13 games with the Sabres this campaign, going scoreless while posting a minus-4 rating over that span, but he played pretty well in the minors, racking up six goals and 17 assists while registering a plus-4 rating in 37 AHL contests. The 24-year-old blueliner may simply think that the KHL will begin its 2020-21 season before the NHL does, in which case he'd be able to play some high-level games overseas before returning to North America for the start of the NHL campaign. That would, however, require his KHL contract to include an NHL out-clause, and at this point it remains unclear if that's the case. Either way, the Sabres are planning on issuing him a qualifying offer to retain his RFA rights, so they'll get the first crack at signing Pilut if and when he returns to North America.
