Stephens was placed on waivers Monday.
ANALYSIS
Stephens has chipped in two goals, one assist and 16 shots on net in 23 NHL outings this season. If he clears, Stephens will probably be sent down to the minors. That could pave the way for Tanner Pearson's return to the lineup from an upper-body injury.

Past Fantasy Outlooks

Stephens posted six points and 36 hits in 38 games as a rookie for the Lightning last year. He was mostly a part-time player in 2019-20, but with Cedric Paquette now in Ottawa, the door is open for Stephens to take on an everyday role as the fourth-line center. It's a job that will come with competition -- Mathieu Joseph and Boo Nieves are also in the mix for that role -- but Stephens should probably be considered the favorite. A second-round pick in 2015, Stephens is far from being fantasy relevant, but he'll do the little things right defensively, which should keep him in the lineup on a regular basis.
Stephens' leadership and tenacity will make him a 10-to-12 year NHL player once he arrives. He could get a couple games here and there in 2019-20, but his permanent locker in Tampa won't be set until 2020-21. He projects as a smothering checker and brilliant penalty killer in the NHL, but Stephens will deliver more than that if the 24 points he delivered in 32 AHL games last season were for real. Don't use a roster spot on him if you're in a long-term dynasty format, but put him on your watch list this year.
Stephens is a hard-working, extremely responsible pivot with middle-six upside. In 2017-18, he started his AHL rookie season slowly, but turned up the heat to earn an All-Star berth and finish with 41 points in 70 games overall; good for 15th among rookies. Stephens will continue to grow his game in the AHL this season, but he could see a couple of call-ups if someone on the big club gets hurt. He'll likely reach the top level in 2019-20.
