Rasmus Andersson

27-Year-Old DefensemanD
Calgary Flames
2023 Fantasy Outlook
Andersson wasn't too negatively affected by the Flames' decline last season, as he was able to score 11 goals and add 38 assists. His 24:05 of ice time cemented his status as the top blueliner on a team not short on defensive talent. Going into the 2023-24 campaign, the smooth-skating Swede remains a threat on the power play, and while he may not match his career-high 6.9 shooting percentage from last year, his assist numbers should rebound if the Flames can collectively find their scoring touch again. He's not an overly physical defenseman, but he's blocked 125 and 136 shots in the last two seasons. Andersson shouldn't be the first rearguard off the board in fantasy, but his production and role should make him a top-120 pick this year in most formats. Read Past Outlooks

Collects two helpers Sunday
DCalgary Flames
April 14, 2024
Andersson produced two assists, four hits and six blocked shots in Sunday's 6-5 win over the Coyotes.
ANALYSIS
Andersson earned his first multi-point effort since Feb. 19. He helped out on tallies by Yegor Sharangovich and Nazem Kadri as part of the Flames' rally after falling behind 5-3 in the second period. Andersson is up to 38 points, 157 shots on net, 183 blocked shots, 42 hits, 42 PIM and a minus-11 rating through 76 contests overall. The defenseman has a modest three points over seven outings in April.

Loses power-play spot?
DCalgary Flames
November 27, 2023
Andersson didn't skate on either of Calgary's power-play units during Monday's morning skate, Pat Steinberg of Sportsnet 960 The Fan reports.
ANALYSIS
It appears Andersson may have lost his spot on the first power-play unit after averaging a substantial 3:24 of ice time with the man advantage per contest through his first 17 games of the year. Although he's collected only two power-play points this campaign, potentially losing his spot on the Flames' No. 1 power-play unit long term would still serve to damage Andersson's fantasy upside in a significant way.

Fantasy managers didn't have to pay much for Andersson in drafts a year ago, but that certainly won't be the case this season. The Swede recently completed a career-best campaign, finishing with 46 assists and 50 points while playing in all 82 of Calgary's regular-season games. Andersson added 19 power-play points, 152 shots on goal, 63 hits and 125 blocks. The Flames may take a step back as a team with the departures of Johnny Gaudreau and Matthew Tkachuk this offseason, but Andersson appears to be a lock to play 22-plus minutes per game in addition to a boatload of time with the man advantage, giving him a high fantasy floor in 2022-23.
Andersson saw a whopping 2:44 worth of power-play time per game last season, but his final numbers (5 goals, 21 points in 56 games) were nearly identical to the previous year (5 goals, 22 points in 70 games) when he averaged just 1:29 of ice time per game with the man advantage. Andersson's greatest attribute at this point is the fact he's locked into a major role on what is an underwhelming Calgary blueline. The Swede offers less than your typical rearguard in terms of both blocks and hits, so it's imperative that Andersson piles up the points in order to be an attractive fantasy option.
Andersson took a marginal step forward with five goals and 22 points in 70 appearances last season, but he also struggled a bit defensively with a minus-7 rating. The Swede is expected to fill a full-time, top-four role in 2020-21 -- that increase in playing time should correspond with a boost in scoring as well. Andersson also saw 1:29 per game on the power play and should reprise his role on the second power-play unit in 2020-21. For a full-season pace, it's reasonable to expect the 24-year-old to approach 30 points with 140 shots on goal, 50-plus PIM and 90 blocked shots as a solid, well-rounded depth option in standard fantasy formats.
Andersson was pretty solid during his first full NHL season in 2018-19, skating in 79 games while recording 19 points (two goals, 17 helpers) and 115 shots on goal. The Swedish blueliner typically featured on the Flames' third pairing, but occasionally saw time alongside Norris Trophy winner Mark Giordano. The plus-17 rating Andersson posted last season demonstrates that he's already capable of playing well in his own zone, which has made it easy for him to gain the trust of coach Bill Peters. The 22-year-old should only continue to improve in 2019-20, and could approach the 30-point mark while adding approximately 140 shots on goal. If he's able to secure more time on Calgary's top pairing, the 2015 second-round pick could be in line for a breakout season within the next two-to-three years.
Andersson spent most of last season with AHL Stockton, producing nine goals and 30 assists in 56 games. He also suited up for 10 games at the NHL level, but failed to register a point. The 21-year-old figures to spend the bulk of the year in the minors again, but replicating (or better yet, exceeding) his plus-20 rating from the latest minor-league tour could result in more opportunities for the Swede at hockey's highest level. Until then, he won't warrant much fantasy attention.
