Valiev put pen to paper on a one-year, two-way deal with Calgary on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Valiev hasn't seen action in the NHL since 2017-18, spending all of the previous campaign in the minors with the Heat. In 57 contests, the 24-year-old notched four goals and 17 helpers. The blueliner will be hard-pressed to secure a spot on the 23-man roster for Opening Night versus Colorado on Oct. 3.

2018
Valiev spent the entirety of the 2018-19 campaign with AHL Stockton, producing 21 points in 57 contests. He only has 12 total games of NHL experience split between the Maple Leafs and Canadiens, and there are a number of players currently ahead of him on the Flames' depth chart. The Russian blueliner will likely spend another season in the minors, and may never prove worthy of a regular spot in an NHL lineup. He can safely be disregarded in all fantasy formats.
The Canadiens aren't sure what they have in Valiev, a hulking defenseman who came over from Toronto in the Tomas Plekanec trade. The Habs were in a position to give him ice time last season but Valiev suffered a lower-body injury that cost him more than a month of action -- he played just two games for Montreal as a result. As part of the Maple Leafs organization, Valiev was known as a defense-first player capable of moving the puck to a degree; has a tendency to stare down forwards on breakout passes. That he's a left-handed shot, a position of need for the Habs, means he'll compete for one of the final spots on the blue line. His two-way contract means the Habs would rather see him develop at AHL Laval, though he'll need to pass through waivers in order to do so.
