McCoshen was cut by the Wild on Monday and reassigned to AHL Iowa.
ANALYSIS
McCoshen joined the Wild this offseason after signing a one-year, two-way pact with the club. Despite not playing in the NHL since 2018-19, the 25-year-old blueliner has registered four goals, three helpers and 115 hits in 60 career games. McCoshen figures to spend the bulk of his time in the minors this season, but he could get an opportunity during the year should injuries or illness occur.

McCoshen spent nearly the entire 2017-18 season at the NHL level, but he appeared in just 38 games, ending up as the seventh man in Florida's defensive group quite often. He scored three goals and four points, but was also able to lay down 71 hits in limited playing time. The 6-foot-3 California native will turn 23 years old prior to the start of the 2018-19 campaign -- the final season of his three-year, entry-level deal with the Panthers. McCoshen still has the potential to earn an everyday role, likely on the bottom pair, but a poor showing in training camp would likely render him a press-box regular.
After a successful run in the USHL, McCoshen was a second-round pick by the Panthers in 2013 and has since headed off to play college hockey at Boston College. In his first two seasons there, the Wisconsin native has been one of the team's top defensemen, scoring six goals and 10 assists in 35 games last season while also picking up 63 penalty minutes as a top-pairing defenseman for one of the best programs in the country. Now an alternate captain going into his junior year, McCoshen will need a few more years between the collegiate and AHL ranks before cracking the Panthers' lineup. However, he's a name to watch moving forward, as he has the size (6-foot-3 and 218 pounds) and makeup to be a future top-four defenseman for the Panthers.
Though he’s not held in as high regard as Boston College teammate and fellow Panthers blueline prospect Mike Matheson, McCoshen certainly looks like he as a bright future ahead of him. The 19-year-old tallied a meager five goals and eight assists over 33 games as a freshman, but at 6-foot-3 and 205 pounds, he offers the size organizations covet in their defensemen. Expect him to improve his output in Year 2 at BC, with his stock likely to rise accordingly.
McCoshen was the first pick of the second round in the 2013 NHL Draft. At only 17 years old, expect him to play the 2013-13 season with his junior team of the last three years, the Waterloo Black Hawks of the USHL. He recorded 11 goals and 33 assists in 54 games on the Waterloo blue line in 2012-13, so keep an eye on him as his career progresses and don't expect to see him in the pros for at least another year.
