Ryan Sproul

Sproul was among nine second-round selections by the Red Wings in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. Since then, he's played predominantly with AHL Grand Rapids, adding 28 goals and 63 helpers over parts of four seasons. The burly rearguard with a heavy shot avoided the minors entirely in 2016-17 -- he posted seven points in 27 NHL games -- but an ACL injury dating back to March ruined his quest for significant playing time, as the Wings were officially eliminated from playoff contention not long after Sproul sustained his ailment. His lack of experience at the highest level figures to keep Sproul's ownership levels to a minimum, and he can only hope that his knee holds up in training camp. If so, the 24-year-old could find himself competing for a spot on the Opening Night roster with similarly talented defenseman Xavier Ouellet.

Sproul had a stellar season in Grand Rapids in 2013-14, picking up 32 points in 72 games. While Detroit's blue line situation is fairly set, Sproul will at least get a hard look in the fall and will be one of the first call-ups if he doesn't make the team.

Sproul spent much of the 2012-13 season in the OHL and needs another year or two in the minors to gain some experience.
