The Lions have released Cephus (foot), NFL.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The move follows news that Cephus has been suspended indefinitely for violating the league's gambling policy. Per the report, Cephus can reapply for reinstatement after the conclusion of the 2023 season. The 2020 fifth-rounder is coming off a 2022 campaign in which a foot injury limited him to four games with Detroit, during which he caught two passes for 15 yards.

After Tyrell Williams went down Week 1 and before Cephus broke his collarbone Week 5, the Wisconsin product had a large role that commanded over 70 percent of the offensive snaps per game. This offseason, though, Detroit went out and invested in the 6-4 DJ Chark in free agency and then traded up in the first round to add another promising perimeter receiver in Jameson Williams. With Amon-Ra St. Brown locked into the slot role, Cephus seems no higher than No. 4 or 5 on the depth chart entering 2022. However, if the Lions take a cautious approach with Williams' return from an ACL injury, the short list of candidates to take his spot in the starting lineup would be Cephus and Josh Reynolds.
Thanks to the massive organizational overhaul in Detroit this offseason, Cephus doesn't have much to speak of in the name of continuity, despite being the lone Lions wide receiver to catch a pass for the team last year. The Lions at least didn't do a lot to restock the position, so the 23-year-old is set to compete for a starting role with two veterans on one-year contracts (Breshad Perriman and Tyrell Williams) and 2020 fourth-round pick Amon-Ra St. Brown. Given that Perriman was cut in August, Williams is 29 years old and coming off shoulder surgery, and St. Brown may need time to acclimate to the pro game, Cephus could have a large role in the passing game this fall. But this offense may revolve around running back D'Andre Swift and tight end T.J. Hockenson, leaving Cephus with not much more than sleeper appeal.
Detroit snagged Cephus in the fifth round of the draft, but the Wisconsin product may have been drafted significantly higher if not for off-the-field concerns from his college days. With that said, Cephus could still be in for a long season of learning as Kenny Golladay, Marvin Jones and Danny Amendola gobble up the vast majority of snaps at receiver on his new team. The Lions also have Marvin Hall around, so Cephus might not even be the next man up. Cephus certainly could work his way there, but he probably won't see consistent playing time until 2021, at the earliest, when he'll be the only Lions receiver under contract. In fact, how he develops in 2020 might play a significant role in the decision to re-sign Amendola at year's end.
