Past Fantasy Outlooks

2016
The 2018 season is Miller's last call. That's the takeaway after Houston selected Texas Tech's Keke Coutee in the fourth round of this year's draft. Miller, a third round pick in 2016, came with the reputation as an athletic player capable of making plays from various offensive positions. Unfortunately, the former quarterback hasn't taken to his primary role as a slot receiver during two seasons in Houston. Injuries have played a role, but there have been very few big plays. Miller's caught 34 passes on 57 targets with two touchdowns while averaging 7.7 yards per catch over his first two NFL seasons. We'll no doubt see Miller get plenty of snaps in preseason games, but his hold on a roster spot is not secure.
Miller started the 2016 season, his rookie year, as the third wideout on the Texans' depth chart but was well behind DeAndre Hopkins and Will Fuller in terms of snaps. When he was felled early by a hamstring injury, the play of Jaelen Strong dropped Miller to fourth on the depth chart. By the time he worked his way into position to get more snaps, the Texans had soured on quarterback Brock Osweiler and became a run-heavy club. A shoulder injury in Week 12 ended Miller's season prematurely. The passing game that was so bad in 2016 doesn't figure to improve much in 2017 with either Tom Savage or rookie Deshaun Watson leading the way, but Miller will at least have a chance to compete with Strong for a Week 1 starting job after Fuller suffered a broken collarbone in training camp. With Fuller expected to miss at least the first month of the season, Miller has a real opportunity to prove himself.
Miller is one of the exciting players Houston added during the offseason that potentially puts the Texans at the head of the pack as one of the most anticipated teams in 2016. The third-round draft pick and former Ohio State quarterback is noted more for his athleticism than his speed, and played primarily in the slot for the Buckeyes after switching to receiver for his senior season. With just one year of experience as a wideout, Miller doesn't project to a big role with Houston in his rookie season, though head coach Bill O'Brien mentioned playing him "in a few different places." O'Brien wouldn't elaborate on what he means by that, but we did see Miller returning punts during rookie minicamp.
