Shelton was released by the Chiefs on Tuesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Shelton signed with the Chiefs on Aug. 9, but he will now look for a new team after he failed to crack the team's final roster. The defensive tackle played in 13 games with the Giants last season, registering 31 tackles including a half-sack.

Getting look from Carolina

Shelton is visiting with the Panthers on Monday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
The 28-year-old defensive tackle has played for four teams over his seven-year NFL career, suiting up for 13 games with the Giants last season and recording 31 tackles and half a sack. Shelton would provide veteran depth to the interior of a Carolina defensive line that lacks star power aside from edge rusher Brian Burns.

The 2015 first-round pick is a discount replacement for Dalvin Tomlinson, who cashed in with a two-year, $21 million contract from Minnesota after making 64 consecutive starts for the Giants. Shelton hasn't been quite as reliable, but he did have a 59-tackle campaign in Cleveland (2016) and a year with 61 tackles and three sacks for New England (2019). Shelton then dipped to 37 tackles and one sack in his 12 games (all starts) for the Lions last season, missing Weeks 13-16 with a knee injury before hurting his pectoral Week 17. The Lions released Shelton in mid-March with a failed physical designation, so he still may be rehabbing from the pec issue.
Cleveland trading Shelton and a fifth-round pick to New England for a third last year seems like one of the more underrated moves Bill Belichick made recently. At 6-2, 345, the 2015 first-rounder fits the mold of a run-stuffing nose tackle, and his presence played a role in the Patriots' historic 2019 defense. While the two-year, $8 million Shelton signed with Detroit might not fully reflect how well he plays his particular role, his price may have been driven down by the fact that Shelton's stature and capabilities are not a fit in every system. That shouldn't be a problem in Detroit, though. As Damon Harrison's replacement, Shelton could push for 65-70 tackles if he stays healthy. Before picking up numerous injuries in 2019, Harrison racked up 50 tackles in 10 games during the 2018 season - an 80-tackle pace over 16 outings.
Shelton enters his third NFL season and is expected to be Cleveland’s starting defensive tackle. He took big strides in year two, and with help from Myles Garrett, the 23 year old should be even better in 2017, especially in stopping the run.
The Browns' first-round selection in the 2015 NFL Draft, Shelton appeared consistently overweight throughout the entirety of the 2015 season and played on just 48 percent of the team's defensive snaps. However, he showed up to training camp in significantly better shape, and is poised to improve on his 36 tackle, zero sack rookie-year performance. Nonetheless, Shelton remains firmly off the IDP radar.
Shelton is expected to serve as the starting nose tackle in defensive coordinator Jim O'Neil's 3-4 scheme. He's known primarily for his run-stopping ability, so if he ends up getting replaced on passing downs, it risks limiting his value as an IDP. He did manage nine sacks in his senior season at Washington, however, but it remains to be seen if that capability will translate to the NFL.
