The Bills released Ray (hamstring) off injured reserve with an injury settlement Friday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
ANALYSIS
Ray landed on injured reserve Monday after suffering a hamstring injury in Saturday's preseason contest against Pittsburgh. Since he and Buffalo agreed upon an injury settlement, he's free to sign with another NFL team immediately. Ray's hamstring issue was originally described as minor, but it's uncertain if that's still the case.

Ray will be playing for his next contract in 2018 after the Broncos decided not to pick up his fifth-year option. The 2015 first-round pick contributed four sacks in reserve duty as a rookie and then finished second on the team with eight sacks in 2016, also picking up two fumble recoveries and a touchdown in the process. He took a few steps back following an offseason wrist injury in 2017, winding up with just one sack in eight games. The Broncos' brass had enough questions about Ray to turn down lucrative offers to trade back in the 2018 draft, instead selecting Bradley Chubb fifth overall. It's not impossible for Ray to bounce back and earn a big contract, but he'll face stiffer competition to operate opposite Von Miller from both Chubb and Shaq Barrett, who also enters a contract year.
Ray took a big step toward being the kind of rusher general manager John Elway had hoped for when he traded up to take the linebacker at No. 23 overall in the 2015 draft. Known for his superior quickness off the snap, Ray notched four sacks playing a supporting role during Denver's Super Bowl run during his rookie season and then came back with eight sacks, including three in Week 3 against the Bengals, his sophomore season. Ray figures to see more opportunities to get after the passer in 2017 with veteran DeMarcus Ware, who served as a pass-rushing specialist in 2016, now retired. Shaq Barrett, the team's primary backup on the edge, has proven more likely to rotate in on early downs as a strong run defender, preserving Ray for passing downs.
Ray, the Broncos' 2015 first-round pick, recorded four sacks as a rookie and might be in line for a larger role in 2016. Though listed as a second-stringer behind Von Miller and DeMarcus Ware, Ware will likely be used sparingly due to his balky back - leaving Ray and Shaq Barrett to compete for additional snaps. Though he was held without a sack in the playoffs, Ray contributed to Denver's Super Bowl 50 win with his first career forced fumble.
