Weekly Rankings: Week 5 Value Meter

This article is part of our Weekly Rankings series.

Sunday Update Complete

Bye Week: Dolphins and Lions

Welcome to the Weekly Value Meter Rankings. This is a guide to help you decide who to start and sit in a given week. It's is not a season-long ranking nor a draft guide, and it's also not really intended as a free agent guide. While I appreciate that you want my opinion on pickups, every league is different, and your decision on whether to add/drop a particular player might also be dictated by other factors than who is rated higher in a given week.

Here are my operating assumptions for the rankings:

- The RB/WR/TE position rankings are for PPR leagues.
- The Flex rankings are for Standard leagues.
- 1 point per 10 rushing/receiving yards.
- 1 point per 20 passing yards.
- 4 points per passing touchdowns.

These are the rankings I use when I make my start/sit decisions. Please consult the rankings first before asking "Should I start Patrick Mahomes or Eli Manning?"

These are my particular rankings. If you want a second opinion elsewhere on the site, you can see our Weekly Projections.

The rankings each week will first post on Tuesday nights, roughly around 10:00 pm ET. I will then do a set of updates before kickoff on Thursday, and again before kickoff on Sunday morning.

I welcome debate on the rankings in the comments. Please keep it friendly.

Quarterbacks

1.Patrick Mahomes KC vs. IND
2.*Deshaun Watson HOU vs. ATL
Note: Forced to check down last week because of the Panthers' defense taking away the deep ball while still putting pressure on him. The OL remains a big problem in Houston.
3.*Matt Ryan ATL at HOU
Note: Somehow threw for 397 yards without any touchdowns.
4.*Lamar Jackson BAL at PIT
Note: A garbage time score to Willie Snead saved his fantasy day.
5.Russell Wilson SEA vs. LAR
6.Carson Wentz PHI vs. NYJ
7.Kyler Murray ARZ at CIN
8.Jameis Winston TB at NO
9.Aaron Rodgers GB at DAL
10.*Tom Brady NE at WAS
Note: Completely shut down by the Bills defense - 18-for-39 for 150 yards and no touchdowns. Should find the going easier this week against Washington.
11.Philip Rivers LAC vs. DEN
12.Jacoby Brissett IND at KC
13.*Dak Prescott DAL vs. GB
Note: Shocking fall back to earth against the Saints, and he'll be playing without Tyrion Smith (ankle) this week against the Packers.
14.*Jared Goff LA at SEA
Note: Was Goff's performance against the Bucs the worst 500+-yard game in NFL history? He threw three INTs and needed a whopping 68 attempts.
15.Baker Mayfield CLE at SF
16.Kirk Cousins MIN at NYG
17.Jimmy Garoppolo SF vs. CLE
18.Teddy Bridgewater NO vs. TB
19.*Chase Daniel CHI at OAK
Note: Relieved Mitchell Trubisky in the win over the Vikes, and will likely start this week. ***Locked in as the starter this week.***
20.*Mason Rudolph PIT vs. BAL
Note: Nearly perfect (24-of-28) throwing low-risk passes to the backs - in part because he could, against the Bengals' lousy linebacking corps.
21.*Andy Dalton CIN vs. ARI
Note: Sacked a whopping eight times, one of which caused a fumble in the red zone. Now he won't have the services of John Ross, either.
22.Joe Flacco DEN at LAC
23.*Josh Allen BUF at TEN
Note: In the concussion protocol after leaving last week's loss to the Pats. Matt Barkley would start if Allen isn't cleared in time. Still in the concussion protocol as of Thursday, and had a limited practice. ***Cleared from the concussion protocol and is now likely to start.***
24.*Gardner Minshew JAC at CAR
Note: (Knee) Limited practice Wednesday and Thursday. ***Full participant in Friday's practice.***
25.Daniel Jones NYG vs. MIN
26.*Kyle Allen CAR vs. JAX
Note: Getting another start this week with Cam Newton already declared out.
27.Marcus Mariota TEN vs. BUF
28.*Luke Falk NYJ at PHI
Note: Darnold has been cleared for non-contact drills but it's unclear who will start this week yet. ***Darnold not yet medically cleared, so Falk will start, David Fales will be the backup.***
29.*Derek Carr OAK vs. CHI
Note: Suffered a minor 'lower leg' injury in the win over the Colts, but it's been dismissed as anything serious. Not on the initial injury list.
30.*Colt McCoy WAS vs. NE
Note: Some chance that he starts - got some first-team work on Thursday. ***Getting the start against the Pats.***
31.*Taysom Hill NO vs. TB
Note: Hasn't thrown a pass yet in the two games that Teddy Bridgewater has started.
32.*Case Keenum WAS vs. NE
Note: Pulled early in the loss to the Giants, ostensibly due to the the foot injury that forced him to miss practice time earlier in the week. A starter for Week 5 hasn't yet been named. Even Colt McCoy is possibly an option. Split the first-team reps with Colt McCoy on Thursday. ***Colt McCoy will start, Keenum will be the backup if his foot allows him to be active.***
33.*Matt Barkley BUF at TEN
Note: Relieved the injured Josh Allen last week, could start this week against the Titans. Took the first-team reps on Wednesday. ***Josh Allen got cleared from the concussion protocol and is now likely to start.***
34.*Dwayne Haskins WAS vs. NE
Note: Did not look ready for prime time in the loss to the Giants. Did not get first-team reps in practice Thursday. ***Will be the third option unless Keenum's foot makes him inactive. Colt McCoy will start.***
35.*Sam Darnold NYJ at PHI
Note: (Mono) Cleared for non-contact drills but his overall status is far from clear this week. Took first-team reps on Thursday - still has final medical tests on Friday before he's cleared to play. ***Friday's exams revealed that there's still too much risk for him to return yet. Luke Falk will start.***
36.*Mitchell Trubisky CHI at OAK
Note: Suffered a dislocated left (non-throwing) shoulder in the win over the Vikings and is unlikely to play this week. Could return after the Week 6 bye. ***Officially ruled out this week.***
37.*Cam Newton CAR vs. JAX
Note: (Lisfranc injury) Still without a timeline, but has already been declared out for this week.

Running Backs

1.*Christian McCaffrey CAR vs. JAX
Note: Played every single offensive snap for the Panthers last week and has played all but five for the season.
2.Ezekiel Elliott DAL vs. GB
3.Alvin Kamara NO vs. TB
4.Dalvin Cook MIN at NYG
5.*David Johnson ARZ at CIN
Note: Had a whopping 11 targets in the loss to the Seahawks. I love his matchup this week against the Bengals.
6.Leonard Fournette JAC at CAR
7.Nick Chubb CLE at SF
8.Derrick Henry TEN vs. BUF
9.*Chris Carson SEA vs. LAR
Note: Great day marred only by a touchdown called back on a penalty, only to see C.J. Prosise vulture the score while he was getting a rest.
10.*Aaron Jones GB at DAL
Note: ***Jamaal Williams has been ruled out, as has Davante Adams.***
11.Mark Ingram BAL at PIT
12.Devonta Freeman ATL at HOU
13.*James Conner PIT vs. BAL
Note: Tweaked an ankle in the win over the Bengals but remained in the game. He might be limited in early practice this week. Sat out practice Wednesday and Thursday - still expected to play, but I'm moving him down a couple of slots due to the uncertainty, and the possibility of sharing time with Samuels. ***Full practice Friday, cleared from the injury list.***
14.Le'Veon Bell NYJ at PHI
15.*Joe Mixon CIN vs. ARI
Note: Which factor means more - the Bengals horrific offensive line, or the sweet matchup against the Cardinals?
16.*Austin Ekeler LAC vs. DEN
Note: Melvin Gordon returns this week but could be limited. Meanwhile, they face the Broncos, who just gave up over 200 yards to Fournette and lost Bradley Chubb for the season.
17.*David Montgomery CHI at OAK
Note: Heavy workload in the second half while the Bears protected a lead.
18.Todd Gurley LA at SEA
19.*James White NE at WAS
Note: ***Workload could be higher with Burkhead ruled out this week.***
20.*Josh Jacobs OAK vs. CHI
Note: (Elbow) Full practice Thursday.
21.*Melvin Gordon LAC vs. DEN
Note: Did not play against the Dolphins, but is expected to make his 2019 debut this week, but his role may be limited. Definitely will be part of the game plan, might even start. ***Anthony Lynn emphasized that Gordon's workload will be limited, and that Ekeler will play 'a lot.'***
22.*Wayne Gallman NYG vs. MIN
Note: The only negative from last week was that Gallman lost a fumble, but so did his backup, Jon Hilliman. He faces a tougher defense against the Vikings this week. (Neck) Limited practices Wednesday and Thursday. ***Removed from the injury list, and Barkley has been ruled out this week.***
23.*Chris Thompson WAS vs. NE
Note: Thompson's five targets seems like a disappointing total, but it led the team. Haskins was just that bad.
24.Jordan Howard PHI vs. NYJ
25.Frank Gore BUF at TEN
26.Carlos Hyde HOU vs. ATL
27.*Jaylen Samuels PIT vs. BAL
Note: Used in the Wildcat formation as the quarterback on multiple plays Monday night and was heavily involved in the game plan.
28.Royce Freeman DEN at LAC
29.Matt Breida SF vs. CLE
30.*LeSean McCoy KC vs. IND
Note: ***(Ankle) Full practice Friday, cleared from the injury list. But he'll also have to share the workload with Damien Williams, who is likely to return this week.***
31.*Ronald Jones TB at NO
Note: Went 19 for 70 yards and even caught a pass for 12 yards. He had more snaps than Barber last week.
32.Miles Sanders PHI vs. NYJ
33.Phillip Lindsay DEN at LAC
34.*Nyheim Hines IND at KC
Note: Had his biggest workload of the season after Marlon Mack exited. ***Marlon Mack had a full practice Friday but is a game-time decision. Complicating matters is that the Colts play on Sunday night - that decision will come roughly around 6:50 ET.***
35.Tarik Cohen CHI at OAK
36.Duke Johnson HOU vs. ATL
37.*Damien Williams KC vs. IND
Note: (Knee contusion) Full practice Wednesday and Thursday. Timeshare with McCoy and maybe even Darrel Williams uncertain. ***Full practice again Friday, but officially listed as questionable.***
38.Sony Michel NE at WAS
39.*Marlon Mack IND at KC
Note: Missed the fourth quarter against the Raiders with an ankle injury - but wasn't 'medically ruled out'. The practice reports should help tell the story. It doesn't help that the Colts play on Sunday night. Did not practice Wednesday or Thursday, but did say he was doing better. Friday's practice will be vital. ***Full practice Friday, but still will be a game-time decision. The call will come roughly around 6:50 ET.***
40.Peyton Barber TB at NO
41.Gus Edwards BAL at PIT
42.Chase Edmonds ARZ at CIN
43.Jeff Wilson SF vs. CLE
44.*Tony Pollard DAL vs. GB
Note: Played only two snaps in the loss to the Saints.
45.Latavius Murray NO vs. TB
46.Adrian Peterson WAS vs. NE
47.C.J. Prosise SEA vs. LAR
48.Raheem Mostert SF vs. CLE
49.*Rashaad Penny SEA vs. LAR
Note: (Hamstring) Supposedly should be ready for Thursday's game against the Rams, but it's hard to buy into Pete Carroll's injury optimism. Listed as a full participant in Monday's walkthrough. Officially available for Thursday night.
50.Ito Smith ATL at HOU
51.*Jordan Wilkins IND at KC
Note: ***Marlon Mack had a full practice Friday but is a game-time decision. Complicating matters is that the Colts play on Sunday night - that decision will come roughly around 6:50 ET.***

53.Dion Lewis TEN vs. BUF
54.Giovani Bernard CIN vs. ARI
55.Jalen Richard OAK vs. CHI
56.Darrel Williams KC vs. IND
57.*Tevin Coleman SF vs. CLE

58.Alexander Mattison MIN at NYG
59.Brandon Bolden NE at WAS
60.T.J. Yeldon BUF at TEN
61.*Dare Ogunbowale TB at NO
Note: Pass-catching back only - Ronald Jones's continued emergence hurts.
62.Dexter Williams GB at DAL
63.*DeAndre Washington OAK vs. CHI
Note: (Ankle) Full practice Thursday.
64.Ryquell Armstead JAC at CAR
65.Ty Montgomery NYJ at PHI
66.Troymaine Pope LAC vs. DEN
67.*Devin Singletary BUF at TEN
Note: (Hamstring) Inactive against the Pats last week but was close to being ready to play. Limited practices Wednesday and Thursday's practices. Coach Sean McDermott's comments were non-commital afterward. ***Status hinges upon pregame workouts.***
68.*Jamaal Williams GB at DAL
Note: Suffered a head/neck injury on the first offensive snap Thursday night. Currently in the concussion protocol. Still not practicing as of Thursday. ***Ruled out for this week.***
69.*Rex Burkhead NE at WAS

70.*Justin Jackson LAC vs. DEN
Note: (Calf) Did not practice Wednesday.
71.*Saquon Barkley NYG vs. MIN
Note: (Ankle) Has already ditched his walking boot. Moving around so much that he could return as early as Week 6, and there's even a tiny chance of returning this week. ***Practiced Friday, but ruled out for this week.***

1.DeAndre Hopkins HOU vs. ATL
2.*Julio Jones ATL at HOU
Note: Bad week for elite receivers nearly all the way around - Julio, Keenan, Hopkins, Beckham, Juju, Thielen. It was rough all over.
3.*Keenan Allen LAC vs. DEN
Note: Another case of hidden production - had a long touchdown called back on an awful OPI call.

Note: Despite not scoring, Thomas still had nine catches for 95 yards and thus had a productive PPR day.
