Likely to use redshirt
July 28, 2019
Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said July 19 that Combs will likely redshirt during his first season with the Hawkeyes, The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports.
ANALYSIS
The Hawkeyes brought a pair of walk-on transfers from the Mid-American Conference to shore up their receiver depth this offseason, with Combs (Central Michigan) and Charlie Jones (Buffalo) both committing to join the squad earlier this summer. Since Combs and Jones aren't being placed on scholarship, both will be eligible to play this fall, but it sounds like Iowa is planning on having the two wideouts in the program through the 2021 campaign. Combs, who logged three catches for 27 yards and a touchdown as a redshirt freshman in 2018, can still play in up to four games in 2019 before Iowa would shut him down in order to preserve a year of eligibility.
