Takes part in spring ball
March 14, 2020
Slovis (elbow) took part in USC's first practice of the spring Wednesday, taking reps with the first-team offense and expressing optimism about his health following the session, Ryan Kartje of the Los Angeles Times reports. "I feel better honestly," Slovis said. "If anything, I've been working a lot in the offseason and developing hip flexibility and mobility. It takes a lot of pressure off my arm. My arm was getting pretty tired."
USC already planned to monitor Slovis' reps in camp after he injured his right elbow in late December in the Trojans' loss to Iowa in the Holiday Bowl, but the rising sophomore quarterback will now get some extended time to rest after the school announced it was cancel the remainder of spring practices, citing concerns about the coronavirus pandemic. Slovis should face no restrictions when the Trojans reconvene for fall camp, when JT Daniels (knee) could also be healthy enough to battle for the starting job. After Daniels tore his ACL in the 2019 season opener, Slovis took over and performed far better than anyone could have expected from a true freshman with a modest pedigree. In 12 outings, Slovis completed 71.9 percent of his attempts for 3,502 yards, 30 touchdowns and nine interceptions.
