Top candidate to replace Taylor
March 30, 2020
Watson will head into fall camp as the favorite to replace Jonathan Taylor as Wisconsin's lead back in 2020, Jesse Temple of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Despite playing only three seasons for the Badgers before entering the 2020 NFL Draft, Taylor left Madison as the No. 6 all-time rusher in NCAA history, leaving big shoes for Wisconsin to fill. Coach Paul Chryst was likely hopeful to have more clarity on the backfield pecking order during the spring, but the coronavirus pandemic will force Wisconsin to wait until fall camp to assess the potential Taylor replacements. While passing-down specialist Garrett Groshek could see more time in down-and-distance spots, the 5-foot-11, 229-pound Watson, a redshirt sophomore, offers a more powerful option between the tackles. He ranked second behind Taylor in rushing attempts (74) and rushing yardage (331) in 2019.
