Miami: Duke Johnson Leaving School Early For NFL
December 28, 2014
Johnson, who ran for 132 yards on 24 carries and added 51 yards receiving in Saturday's Duck Commander Independence Bowl against South Carolina, will leave school early and enter the NFL Draft, he announced at a press conference Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Johnson will leave as the Hurricanes all-time leading rusher, but his last carry resulted in a fumble that ultimately led to a winning touchdown for South Carolina. Johnson will likely be a second or third round pick due to concerns about his size and durability. Miami will likely turn to Joseph Yearby and Gus Edwards in 2015, though they currently have three running backs verbally committed for next season, including top recruits Mark Walton and Jordan Scarlett.

Past Fantasy Outlooks

Johnson was a consensus top-five fantasy RB heading into last year, but a broken ankle in November robbed him of what would have been a highly productive breakout season. He totaled 920 yards (6.3 YPC) and six touchdowns last year despite facing strong run defenses of Florida and Florida State. Johnson just might be the most elusive back in the country, but the ankle is a concern entering this season. It's also unclear whether he might lose some of his elusiveness after bulking up to 5-9, 206, after playing at 196 last year. If these concerns turn out to be unwarranted, though, Johnson has about as much upside as any RB in the nation.
There might not be a more exciting running back in college football this year than Johnson, who established himself as one of the nation's most dominant open-field runners despite primarily playing off the bench as a freshman last year. Johnson needed just 139 carries to bolt for 947 yards (6.8 YPC) and 10 touchdowns in 12 games, adding 221 yards and a touchdown on 27 catches while throwing a touchdown pass and returning two kickoffs for touchdowns. Although the Miami offense was pass-happy in 2012, Johnson is too good of a player not to get a much bigger workload in 2013. He inherits an offensive line returning all of its starters from 2012.
Johnson is an incoming recruit for Miami who looks too good to keep off the field. He might be good enough to significantly hurt Mike James' workload.
