Kaufman announced his retirement from college football Thursday in a column posted on 247Sports.com.

Kaufman, who finished with one reception for 28 yards last season, is set to graduate in May, but had a year of college eligibility remaining. The tight end implied that "some foot injuries" and "a couple of concussions (one too many)" suffered during his college career influenced his decision to step away from the game. Though he wasn't a major part of the Mustangs' passing attack last season, Kaufman was valued as a blocker, so his departure will leave SMU thin at tight end. Ryan Becker is the only remaining scholarship tight end on the roster who has recorded a reception in his career.
