NHL Playoff Observations: Bu-Bye Long Island

Just a few things that caught my eye:

  • Oh-fer. Nothing, nadda, zilch. That's production on the power play for the Isles. 0-for-14. Gulp.
  • Compare and contrast Jake Allen and Petr Mrazek. Wait -- I'll change that. Contrast them because there sure isn't a comparison.

  • Beer leaguers make better changes than the Red Wings did Monday night. And by a long shot. They coughed up two hairballs that became Tyler Johnson goals.
  • KRONWALL'D. I'm pretty sure Nikita Kucherov is still trying to get the plates on the truck that ran him down. My teeth hurt just watching. That's the hit of the first round.
  • Oh-fer. That's shots for John Tavares tonight in almost 21 minutes of work. And goals from a blueliner -- any blueliner -- through the entire series. Are the Caps really that good?
  • Tyler Johnson's release is hot. His release from his wrong leg is as quick as the NHL's best. Petr Mrazek didn't have a chance on either shot.
  • Five-for-11 -- that'd be an amazing stat line for an MLB hitter in a three-game home stand. But not half of the total shots taken by one team (again, the Isles). The shooter? Johnny Boychuk. Those 11 shots set a new NHL playoff record in futility. Gulp (again).
  • Nicklas Backstrom and Evgeny Kuznetsov -- that's a pretty sweet one-two punch down the middle.
  • Steven Stamkos played 13:38 and spent four more in the penalty box. And both were stupid penalties. The first came 40 seconds into a power play; the second was a skate-through-the-crease-and-whallop-the-tender brain fart that came seconds after the Wings narrowed the lead to 3-2. Dude, you gotta be smarter than that. Remember the letter on your jersey?
