The Vampire (Football) Diaries: Let the Feeding Frenzy Begin

Nothing else matters.

That's the feeling I had all last Sunday watching my teams. In six different leagues I lost because I played either the highest or second highest scoring team when I was the third highest, or because I took too many injuries. Heck, in one league I benched Corey Davis for Sammy Watkins and had O.J. Howard at tight end. That was a beautiful point swing. So, it was generally an ugly week for me.

But like I said, nothing else mattered. After Jared Goff got me out to huge head start in the Thursday game, I was going toe-to-toe with the No. 1 team in my Vampire league. It was all I cared about. I knew if Count Chocula could eat again, the league could be mine.

Ezekiel Elliott, Calvin Ridley and George Kittle brought me even closer before the Sunday night showdown between Pittsburgh and Baltimore would decide things. I was up big but not big enough to feel good. In fact, after a John Brown early touchdown put my opponent well within striking distance I was convinced that I was about to have the second-highest single-week score of the entire season only to lose. I had James Conner left going against Brown, Ben Roethlisberger and Tyreek Hill (on Monday night).

I owe a big thank you to the Ravens' defense. They held Big Ben in check with an awesome second half that pretty much sealed it for me. When Hill didn't have a vintage performance Monday night, I ended up winning by a comfortable 17.15 points – while my opponent had Alshon Jeffery on his bench outscore Chris Hogan in his lineup by 17.5 points. So, I also owe a big thank you to him, too.

Count Chocula will now go on a feeding frenzy. It may not happen immediately, but barring injuries it's almost a certainty. At 2-2, I'm in sixth place and will go on the hunt with Alvin Kamara joining the squad.

After using my No. 1 waiver position to add Tarik Cohen, I'm suddenly deep at running back in a format that makes it very difficult to generate running back points until you get a win or two. With a few other tweaks, my roster/matchup now looks like the following, with my opponent this week possessing the top prize. If I win this week, it will actually be hard for me to not win a championship.

Count Chocula – 0.0

QB – Jared Goff
RB – Ezekiel Elliott
RB – Alvin Kamara
WR – Calvin Ridley
WR – Tyler Boyd
TE – George Kittle
Flex – James Conner
Flex – Austin Ekeler
K – TBD
DEF – Tennessee

Bench:

Jordy Nelson
Tyler Lockett
Cameron Meredith
Antonio Callaway
Geronimo Allison
Alfred Blue
Tarik Cohen

Kris G's Team – 9.0

QB – Philip Rivers
RB – Todd Gurley
RB – Christian McCaffrey
WR – Keenan Allen
WR – Jarvis Landry
TE – Zach Ertz
Flex – Will Fuller
Flex – Devin Funchess
K – Stephen Gostkowski
DEF – Minnesota

I have some decisions to make before kickoff, but don't see too many changes coming. The main decisions all hinge on Allison. If he's ruled out, I can put him in an IR slot to add my kicker, not having to drop someone. And if he plays, I have to weigh whether or not to stick him in my last flex, which is a close call between Ekeler, Nelson and Allison. I want the highest floor for this spot. With our star RB's theoretically cancelling each other out, I just want to make sure I get solid points everywhere else to try to edge him in what I expect to be a tight matchup. Allison appears likely to be out, but if he suits up with Randall Cobb (hamstring) already sidelined and Davante Adams (calf) hurting, he could be in line for a huge target share in a potential shootout. Ultimately, I think I'm sticking with Ekeler, who I view as a special player on par with the league's best satellite backs like James White, Chris Thompson and Cohen.

After failing to find a trade partner for James Conner this week, I'm hoping the Steelers wise up and feed him on the ground against a Falcons defense that lacks much punch. He could be the X-factor that determines my fate this week.

Last week, nothing else matters was going through my head while I watched the Sunday action. This week, another Metallica classic will be ringing in my ears if I can pull off another win. If Count Chocula steals another top five RB in Gurley, the rest of the league will be hearing "For Whom the Bell Tolls" as I go on a killing spree and completely take over.
