Sunday NFL Recap

- The big news of the day is that several unconfirmed reports indicate that not only will Peyton Manning miss Week 1, he may need another surgery on his neck that will sideline him even longer. While many viewed him coming off the PUP list as a positive sign, keep in mind that even if he was going to be ready Week 6 at the earliest the team would likely have made that move. Manning and the Colts receivers need to be downgraded.

- Matt Cassel may not be ready for Week 1 either. He apparently suffered a rib injury which may be worse than originally thought. Look for Tyler (not Shane) Palko to be under center if Cassel isn't ready to go.

- Steven Hauschka was claimed by Seattle and will be their kicker to start the season. The Seahawks released veteran Jeff Reed in favor of the younger Hauschka in case you've already drafted Reed.

- Chester Taylor signed with the Cardinals. This move made a lot of sense after rookie Ryan Williams went down with a season-ending injury. Look for Taylor to assume back-up duties once he gets up to speed with the new offense. Marion Barber is now the clear-cut #2 RB in Chicago.

- Kendall Hunter was named Frank Gore's backup. Given Gore's injury history, Hunter may be someone you want to stash on your bench. Anthony Dixon remains on the roster but Hunter has more upside of the two.

- Brandon Tate was claimed by the Bengals. This is newsworthy for those in leagues that count return yards. While the new kicking rules will likely suppress return stats this season, Tate could emerge as the primary kick returner for the Bengals. As far as receiving goes, it should say something about Tate's ability that the Patriots let him go considering their lack of depth at the position.

- LaRon Landry may not play in Week 1. The safety is dealing with a hamstring/Achilles' injury that could keep him out longer than next week. Look for other options in IDP leagues if he's not ready to play.
