Random Baseball Thoughts

I'm just sitting and watching baseball with random thoughts running through my head. Come along with me and let's think baseball.

Two seasons ago we got a glimpse of Jacoby Ellsbury. He had a fantastic season, but we weren't really sure if he could sustain that quality of play. Last year he was hurt most of the time and he lost the season. This year he's playing MVP quality baseball. And just where did that power come from? It's a great story and I'm happy for the Ellsbury owners out there. Enjoy the ride. We know he's for real.

In case you missed it, Cardinals top prospect Shelby Miller has been suspended indefinitely by St. Louis. They did not mention why he was suspended. Had to be something really BIG for that to happen. He's a top hope of the pitching starved Redbirds.

What would you do with Carlos Zambrano if you were the Cubs? Who would want him in a trade if you were another general manager? How can they live with that type of personality on their club? Maybe it's best if they just cut him loose after his suspension is over.

I'm watching Roy Halladay pick the Diamondbacks apart pitch by pitch. The guy throws about 6 pitches at 4 different speeds. He just gets better as the game goes along. Josh Collmenter made one bad pitch to Shane Victorino and he could lose the game.

Jonathan Sanchez left his start against the Braves when he turned his ankle. That could be a big loss if he's out for any more than today. The Giants are really banged up.

Last night's last minute draft signings might have been the final straw for the Powers That Be in baseball. The money was outrageous. The games of chicken being played between front offices and agents was almost shameful. I think the entire process will be revamped in the next collective bargaining agreement.

Justin Upton has had a tremendous season, no doubt about it. Credit goes to Upton, of course. But hitting coach Don Baylor has to get some of the credit for teaching Upton some very real nuances of hitting a baseball. It's similar to the way Charlie Manuel tutored Jim Thome to greatness and taught hitting to Ryan Howard.

Lyle Overbay is a good addition for the DBacks. He plays defense and he's a professional hitter.

I'm really thrilled for Thome. Imagine hitting 600 home runs in the big leagues! He's as good a human being as he is a power hitter. He should go into the Hall of Fame on the first ballot. He probably has 0 enemies in baseball. There aren't too many guys that can say that.

I'm still in a state of disbelief about the stunning decline of the Reds. I had them as the Central champs at the beginning of the season. They did nothing at the trade deadline and they're paying for it. They certainly could have traded any one of their catchers as well as many, many other 40 man roster guys. They need pitching. Who woulda thunk it that the Reds pitching tanked? Injuries, ineffectiveness, etc. They have work to do on that franchise. Now we see how the Brewers can taste a division title and they may not be denied. I'm happy for them.

David Ortiz missed a double header today due to illness. That's anywhere from 8 to 10 at-bats that I can't get back.

September should be amazing because of a) the late season call ups and b) the enormous number of double headers that have to be played. That may bode well for anyone behind in their league. Good chance to score some points. That's when you'll see some of the marginal AAA and AA pitching come up. That rainy spring weather will come back and rear its ugly head from September 1 until the end of the season.

The Tigers will miss Al Albuquerque even if it's only for a week. He's a very underrated part of the bullpen.

I really love the deal the Tigers made for Delmon Young. He's due to break out of his slump and there won't be any better place to do it than in the Tigers lineup. If you have Maglio Ordonez on your roster, you may want to look for help in the outfield. Your trading deadline is probably over, but so is Maglio's playing time. And Carlos Guillen is hurt again.

VMart is playing on bad knees. For how long?

It is totally quiet in Philly. The DBacks have just hit Doc with 2 runs on a big, big double by Lyle Overbay. DBacks could win this game. Putz on to save in the 9th.

Just for the record, I'm a huge fan of Royals C Salvador Perez. I wrote about him during the fall league and spring training. He and Johnny Giavotella are big parts of the Royals future.

My RotoWire column this week is about Rays pitcher Matt Moore. I hope you'll stop by and give it a read. Should be up tomorrow or Thursday. My column for MLB.com this week features Neftali Feliz. Look for me there in the Opinions column.
