Friday NFL Notes

Arian Foster left practice with a hamstring injury – This is easily the news of the day. Last year's breakout superstar is arguably the No. 1 fantasy player heading into drafts, and regardless of the severity, it is concerning to see him have any injury at all. After pulling up lame on a long run at practice Friday morning, Foster took the rest of the day off with some degree of a hamstring strain. Coach Gary Kubiak couldn't elaborate on how bad it is, but any hamstring tweak can stay with a player all season and is often a wrong step away from becoming an outright pulled muscle. Keep an eye on this one. If Foster is held out of most of the preseason that may be an indication that he will be slowed by this all year. But then again, this is the same guy that reportedly played 2010 on a torn meniscus, so perhaps it will be a non-issue.

Malcom Floyd re-signed with the Chargers – In a surprising turn, Floyd elected to re-up with San Diego instead of take his talents to the Baltimore harbor or the Arizona desert, as had been most speculated. This is good news for Philip Rivers who retains another huge deep threat to help keep defenses honest. Though for Floyd and the rest of the Chargers receivers, namely Vincent Jackson and Antonio Gates, this slightly downgrades their values by spreading targets a bit more. Floyd would have easily been a No. 2 option with the Ravens or Cardinals instead of No. 3 for the Bolts.

Marcedes Lewis signed a five-year extension with the Jaguars – It only seemed a matter of time before the Jags gave Lewis the long-term deal he was waiting for. In a breakout season, the mammoth tight end was second on the team in catches, yards and easily led them in scores. He remains Jacksonville's primary red zone target and could have sneaky good value this season if he expands on last year.

Kevin Boss signed with the Raiders – Boss will be hard to replace in New York, given the Giants' lack of experienced or capable tight ends remaining on the roster. He, meanwhile, will struggle to fill Zach Miller's shoes in Oakland, as Boss is simply not the same caliber athlete that Miller is. Nevertheless, he should serve as a solid, yet unspectacular check down option for Jason Campbell.

Chris Ivory had surgery for a sports hernia – Ivory was expected to miss most of the preseason recovering from offseason foot surgery. As it turns out he will also be rehabbing from a sports hernia over that stretch. While the second surgery does cause greater concern for his overall health, it's the health of rookie Mark Ingram and veteran Pierre Thomas that will really impact his value, which in a backup role this season won't be much.

Josh Cribbs (knee) returned to practice today – Cribbs got back onto the field for the first time since Sunday, and stated that his knee is doing well. It remains to be seen how new head coach Pat Shurmur will utilize him in the offense, but it sounds as if the explosive receiver will be more heavily involved this year coming out of the backfield. That, however, does not necessarily spell fantasy relevance for Cribbs, as his touches will likely be too inconsistent to count on week to week.
