NHL Playoff Observations -- Thursday Night

Just a few things that caught my eye:

  • I'm not taking anything away from Pavel Datsyuk's backhand goal -- it was beautiful. But it illustrates the problem with butterfly goalies. Why was Antti Niemi going down on a shot from the outside of the circle?
  • Logan Couture can't be 22 years old... can he? A four-game goal streak as a rookie playoff performer. Wow.
  • Dan Boyle isn't flashy but man, he really is good. That through the legs pass on goal three was brilliant. So was the hammer drill he delivered on Tomas Holmstrom. Not bad for a little guy.
  • Say what you will about Joe Thornton but you can't help but be impressed with his defensive leadership. I never thought I'd ever say those words alongside Jumbo Joe's name.
  • I can't help but wonder if we've just witnessed the real Stanley Cup -- this series was as good as you could have ever wanted.
  • Pretty easy to see the book on Niemi. That goal by Henrik Zetterberg was almost identical to Datsyuk's -- shelf backhand with the netminder going down early.
