Friday Night Baseball Notes

Some prospects are beginning to get their call to the big leagues. This is the time of year to keep an eye on big league transactions.

Eric Hosmer's promotion to the Kansas City Royals is one I have been looking forward to for the past couple weeks. Kila Ka'aihue was given a fairly good opportunity to show the Royals brass that he could hit enough to keep the 1B position. He hovered around .200 by the end of April and he just didn't produce the power the position requires. Enter Eric Hosmer. I really think he has what it takes to keep the job for years to come. He may start slowly, but the tools are there. The month of April was not Ka'aihue's only chance to win the job. He's been given chances before.

The Braves will give top pitching prospect Julio Teheran a start on May 7th. The team has indicated that regardless the results, Teheran will return to AAA Gwinnett following the one start. The opportunity exists because the club wants to keep their rotation on schedule and the Saturday start for Teheran accomplishes that goal. He has a tremendous future.

Ben Revere is going to get some playing time in the Twins outfield. He should be able to provide fantasy owners with some stolen bases. If he can get on base. That's a fairly big if. I saw lots of him in the Arizona Fall League and I was impressed. He bunts well and he can leg out infield hits. What I liked most was a nice easy swing that allowed him to dump hits in front of outfielders. He's very much like Juan Pierre with better defense and a stronger arm.

Carlos Gonzalez is an outstanding defensive outfielder. He made some plays that most other fielders only dream of making. He takes direct routes to balls with great speed and first step quickness. Oh, and by the way, he can really hit. He's coming around with the bat, but I think he has to shorten the swing a little.

I got to see the Rockies for 3 games at Chase Field. For some reason, Tulo really struggles against Arizona. Todd Helton's swing has returned and he is pulling the ball with authority. I can honestly say that in the plate appearances I saw, Jason Giambi's bat speed was virtually gone.

The Rockies really have an organizational hole at 3B. Nolen Arenado could be the ultimate answer, but he might be penciled in at 1B to take over for Todd Helton. Arenado is the real deal, but he has to gain minor league experience. So actually, both first and third are organizational issues.

It was a year ago that Brennan Boesch burst on the scene and lifted a number of fantasy teams to great heights. Then in the second half of the season his slump helped tank those same teams. Is more of the same in store? I don't think so. I think he learned a great deal about major league pitching and making adjustments. I think he'll land somewhere between the great first half and second half Boesch of last season.

If Brent Morel continues to hit .200 will the White Sox give more playing time at 3B to Mark Teahen? How about bringing up Dayan Viciedo and letting him play third? I'm just askin.

I sat in my car before the DBacks game and listened to Oakland vs. Cleveland in their extra inning game Thursday. Those Oakland pitchers are getting absolutely no run support. That's what was predicted before the season began. Great pitching and no hitting. It's almost criminal to have those great starts and super relief appearances go to waste. It's a long season so maybe the A's will go get a hitter or two.

Will the Dodgers make their next payroll?

People ask me about Mark Melancon, the Astros new closer. I've never seen him pitch. What do you think? I did get to see enough of Brandon Lyon when he pitched for the DBacks and Tigers. Seeing is believing. Some guys are better pitching with less pressure.

How soon until the Giants start shopping for some younger blood? They really do miss Andres Torres. Also Pablo Sandoval. They better do something quickly before the Rockies just run away and hide and/or the Dodgers improve. It's the Rockies that have the best talent in the NL West. And the best manager. I'm sorry the Giants didn't just stick with Brandon Belt and let him play.

Is ARod's bat slowing down? He got busted inside this week on mid 90's fastballs. He fouled them off and had trouble getting around. I'm just askin. He and Jeter and Posada and.....well where's Jesus Montero already? He could really inject some life to that lineup as a DH every couple of days to give Posada a couple nights off. I have him on almost every one of my teams. Yes, I know the Yankees had been raking the ball, but have you noticed that it's slowed down in the past week or two? Losing Eric Chavez won't help. Poor guy is hurt every year. I'm on a personal campaign to bring up Jesus Montero.

Who would have ever thought that Carl Crawford would be hitting in the lower third of the Red Sox lineup? Not me. Not you either. Well yesterday he moved up again. He's too good a hitter to be hitting 7th.
