A Cold And Rainy Night At Chase Field

It's a cold and rainy night at Chase Field, but the roof is closed. It's nice and comfortable so let's talk baseball.

I have decided to climb into this century by opening a Twitter account. You can now reach me on Twitter at BerniePleskoff. I would be most honored if you would follow me. I must admit that it may take me a couple of decades to figure it out all, but be patient with me. I'm kind of slow at technology.

I'm not disappointed in Brandon Beachy's start today. He wasn't as sharp as his first outing, but that happens to all pitchers. He's still a good 5th starter option for Atlanta and for those of us in fantasy looking to fill out starting rotations. Beachy only walked two today but he gave up four runs and 7 hits. He still has an ERA under 4 at 3.75.

Jack Wilson is resting comfortably in manager Eric Wedge's dog house. There has been no date given for Wilson's ultimate release. Apparently, the "dust up" occurred because of Wilson's reluctance to play 2B. A natural SS, Wilson was moved to 2B during the spring. I guess it's not working so well. In the meantime, Adam Kennedy has taken over for Wilson and is playing well. Should we look for Dustin Ackley soon? Just askin.

What's up with Clay Buchholtz? I'm a little concerned about him. He has had two very tough outings and the Red Sox really need him to step up. He only went 3.2 innings today and gave up 8 hits. His ERA is now 7.20. Ouch!

Last year they served hot popcorn in the press room at Chase Field. This year it's fat pretzels out of those big machines. Not bad.

Don't look now, but I think that;s Kyle Farnsworth coming out of the bullpen in the 9th inning for the Rays. That's exactly what I was afraid would happen. Here's the thing. With that arm and with that heat, don't you think he would have been closing games already by this time in his career if there weren't some type of problem? Like control, command and not having much movement on the ball. I wish him well. This may just be his year. But the Rays pen remains a mess.

I'm totally sick about what Manny has done by being Manny. When he came up with Cleveland I saw a very young, fresh, naive almost shy guy who lived to hit. His lifetime stats? 19 seasons, .312 batting average, 1831 RBI, 1544 runs, 555 home runs and here's the grand daddy of them all- an OPS of .996. Then instead of Manny Ramirez he became "Manny Being Manny." Being Manny will now forfeit his Hall Of Fame entry and substitute that with a place in the Hall Of Shame. It's a very sad story that he wrote all by himself.

I've been a fan of Gio Gonzalez for a while. Those who read me regularly know I'm all over him. He did it again today. This is one fine pitcher. Hope you got him. He threw the type of game that Oakland has to have. They don't score runs for their pitchers. It's a ton of pressure, but guys like Gio, Anderson and Cahill are outstanding.

I traded Trevor Cahill in my AL Only keeper league for Jesus Montero. Here's the thing. I would have Cahill this year only. I could have Montero for 3 years total. I needed catching. Badly. So, what would you have done? I hated doing it.

I'll be watching the Cardinals next week at Chase Field. I'll get to see for myself what pitchers are doing to Albert. I still say that the guy to watch on that club is named Rasmus.

Chone Figgins had a terrible April and May last year, too. He's really in another prolonged early season slump. He did turn his season around in the 2nd half when he hit in the 280;s. But don't we want consistency? I think he'll get out of it by June.

The Indians have to be thrilled with the play of Jack Hannahan. He's hitting and playing good defense at 3B. I credit Orlando Cabrera with the improvement in Asdrubal Cabrera. They're feeding off each other. Not related by the way. And the Indians pitching is better so far than I saw this spring. Much better. Will it hold? Just askin'.

The Yankees must really be ticked about the outstanding publicity the Red Sox got during the pre-season. "The Red Sox will run away with the East" and blah blah blah. We all thought it. Admit it. You, me, everyone. Well, they still may win it all but they're making things very difficult on themselves.

If the Phillies are THIS GOOD without Chase Utley, how good are they with Chase Utley?

The Mark Grace "Legend" in the DBacks "Legends Race" (like the Brewers Sausage Race) still hasn't won a race. This is the second season. I don't think he will.

Pittsburgh has made life miserable for the Rockies. It's so good to see a team like Pittsburgh have success with young, good players. I hope they can keep it up.

I wonder if Ozzie is getting an itchy closer finger in Chicago. Matt Thornton has scuffled and the White Sox are loaded with options. We've already seen Chris Sale but I think Jesse Crain and Sergio Santos will loom large before the season is half over.

Aaron Crow had an outstanding spring to win a job in the Kansas City bullpen. He had a terrible 2010 in the minor leagues but he showed he belonged in the spring. Now, can he show he can stay?

Bruce Chen has won his last 5 starts going back to last season. There was a no-decision in there as well. The wins are nice, but I still don't trust. Too many problems with command and control.

A friend of mine told me the Tigers" took it on the Chen" today. I told him to go away and never come back.

Of course-I picked up Willie Bloomquist in one of my leagues today. Wouldn't you know it? He was on the bench tonight.

By the way-Stephen Drew signed an extension and he'll be the DBacks SS all of 2012 with a mutual option for 2013. He's a very under rated player. Good defense and he's getting better at the plate all the time.

Did you see that Carlos Beltran hit two homers today. Wow-now that's a name from the past.

If I'm the Red Sox I'm on the phone to Bengie Molina,Bengie's agent and anyone who knows Bengie. The Red Sox need him badly. Bengie is one very good defensive catcher.

By the way, I do not put mustard on those pretzels.

If you don't find our RotoWire writer's blogs on the home page, look in the archive. Or, just hit blogs and click on my name if you want to read something I've written. I think that's how it works. I will usually have something up for you to read when you're bored. Or, if you need to go to sleep quickly, read it before bed time.

And with that I'll say goodnight. I'll blog again in the Cardinals series. Catch my column next week on RotoWire and please follow me on Twitter at BerniePleskoff. And to those who have signed up already, thank you. I don't know how to send you my thanks individually on the Twitter system. So here it is---thanks so much. And thanks to RotoWire's Derek Van Riper who has been such a tremendous help to me since I came on board a couple years ago. Just want to say that. Derek's the best!
