NFL Training Camp Notes

Maurice Jones-Drew has suffered a shin contusion from Thurday night's preseason game.  The Jags have run extensive tests on him, and it appears not too bad.  If you think there's a nervous owner in your league, definitely deal for him.  I still have him as the top RB in any PPR format.

Kevin Jones (CHI) is done for the season.  Garrett Wolfe is now the backup in Chicago.  This could help Matt Forte owners as the coaches will now have the decision to make between Wolfe and Forte on 3rd down or other critical situations, instead of a more capable Jones and Forte.

Billy Miller (Achilles' tendon) is done for the season.  Very unfortunate for Miller.  From a fantasy perspective this only helps Jeremy Shockey, who is a huge candidate to rebound this season.  The horse is down and I'd be kicking it to mention how good New Orlean's offense is and now Shockey is going to be relied upon even more.  My predictions for Shockey are 750+ yards and at least 6 TDs.

Davone Bess started Thursday night's game for the Dolphins.  He ended the night with five catches for 39 yards.  I loved watching this guy in Hawaii late nights on Saturday.  He has all the attributes of a great receiver and those in deeper leagues (especially PPR) should not forget about him.  Over his final five games last year he recorded 30 receptions and 279 receiving yards.

Going opposite last night's theme, here are some players I think have been drafted way too high:

Brett Favre - Unless you're in a NFC North-only league (credit Pianowski), don't take him outside a bye-week filler.  He's not going to be that good.  Trust me.

I'm also not buying a top-3 QB pick with Peyton Manning - a |STAR|great|STAR| QB, but IMO will finish outside the top-5 fantasy-wise, Brees, Brady, Rodgers, Schaub, and an X-factor (Warner, Romo or Rivers).

T.J. Houshmandzadeh - He's had one great season and people are taking him in the fourth round of 12-team drafts.  He's going before his former teammate Ochocinco, which is ridiculous in my opinion.

Matt Ryan - Everyone loves him, but I still say he was a rookie, and everyone goes too far with his stats because of that.  Atlanta remains a run-first team and he was shockingly taken in the second round of a 12-team draft I did the other night.  He's good in real life football and I'll root for ATL against any team other than the Bills, but he's not in my top-10 QBs.
