Playoff Observations -- Saturday

Just a few things that caught my eye:

  • Box scores lie. Just take a look at the body of work of both Alexander Semin and Evgeni Malkin on Saturday. The former had two assists; the latter had one. But neither did squat during the game. Semin was benched most of the third and Malkin couldn't bother with a back check that resulted in a goal. Spit.
  • Still don't believe that goaltenders rule the playoffs? Go to YouTube and search "Varlamaov save on Crosby" and "Luongo amazing save on Chicago." Go now. Come back and tell me I'm wrong.
  • Enormous surprise -- Sami Salo got a boo-boo. He should try a special suit of gauze, bubble wrap and tensor bandages under his equipment. Might help.
  • The NHL should be doing everything in its power to market the snot out of the feud between Alexander Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby. The two clearly don't like each other and it's only going to get more intense as each game passes. Great 8 vs. the Kid. Sounds like a boxing match.. or heaven forbid, MMA. Another missed opportunity by Le Commissionaire.
  • Pittsburgh's fast start was actually counterproductive -- Marc-Andre Fleury needs intense, early work to get in a groove. He didn't get it. He wasn't awful but he sure wasn't great.
  • News alert! News alert! Charles Wang regrets buying the New York Islanders. Not sure I saw THAT coming. Maybe some weatherstripping or a new storm door might have kept that US$208.8 million from leaking out of his pockets over the last nine years. I know -- cut up those third jerseys and plug the holes with those.
