NHL Stanley Cup Observations: Beards win!

Just a few things that caught my eye:

  • I can't figure out which Duck Dynasty cast member Joe Thornton resembles. I'm thinking Phil, but I'm not ruling out Uncle Si.
  • Is it just me or is Joe Pavelski really laboring? His skating just isn't the same.

  • Joonas Donskoi is no Rendel -- there have been other Finnish superheroes before him. But he sure looked like one Saturday.
  • Martin Jones continues to stand on his head this series -- he's already faced more shots in three games than he did in the first six against the Blues. But tell me -- why do some backups become excellent starters while those with better pedigrees just get all stiff and uptight. I'm talking to you, Jonathan Bernier.
  • The Toronto Star rated the playoff beards of Jumbo Joe, Brent Burns and Phil the Thrill. Thornton barely beat Phil for the best beard still standing, but I think the food in there can stand on its own. Ugh.
  • So ... expansion draft for the 2018 Las Vegas whatevers. The Pens will only be able to protect one goalie. I know who I'd keep. Cost effective. Talented. #NoBrainer.
  • Ben Lovejoy -- the man NO-ONE took in their postseason pool.
  • Auston Matthews is learning about what media coverage is all about now that the NHL Combine is underway. He got a get out of jail free card in Switzerland this past season. Now media members are reporting on his barefoot technique on the Y-balance test. Yes, I live in the long shadow of Toronto. Sigh.
