NHL Playoff Observations: Hit Parade

Just a few things that caught my eye:

  • Joe PAW-velski had a big night Sunday. No wonder his teammates named that stray cat after him.
  • Kari Lehtonen = sieve. Then again, who really trusts him? He allowed more goals in the first than he stopped. But is Antti Niemi, the hunchback of San Jose, much better? Ugh.

  • Is anyone else drinking Teemu Selanne's Kool-Aid? Does this year really "belong to the Sharks?"
  • All of a sudden, the Pens are looking wickedly deep down the middle. The Caps? Not so much. Gulp.
  • Olli Maatta deserved better. Brooks Orpik just blew through his head. Is three games enough? Maatta may not return anytime soon.
  • Which is harder -- slack line or tight rope? Both are techniques that require mastery and Antoine Roussel hasn't figured that out just yet. Three penalties, two of which resulted in scores including the winner? Ugh.
  • Auston Matthews has no idea what hit him after the draft lottery. Still, it was a better reaction than the one Connor McDavid had when the Oilers won last year. #priceless
  • The Triplets are back! The Triplets are back! Who needs Stammer anyway?
  • Is Pekka Rinne's groin a bit tight? That long stretch late in Game 1 looked like a tweak. Or worse.
  • Gingers rule. Freaking Cody Eakin has seven points in eight games. Give a man an opportunity and just watch what he does with it.
  • So ... what does Pittsburgh do with their goalies come expansion draft time? Matt Murray has exploded in Marc-Andre Fleury's absence and it's said just one goalie is keepable. #conundrum
  • When will Alexander Ovechkin break lose from the shackles of the flightless birds? The Caps' success depends on it.
  • Just in case you're wondering, there WAS a victory parade in Toronto today. All hail, poor Auston. All those James Reimer #34 jerseys got yanked off the discount rack at RealSports and new name plates are already being sewn on. Guaranteed.
  • Happy birthday, David Backes. Will a good playoff earn him a new contract in St. Loo or is he past his best before date at 32?
  • Those teams in the west are trying to kill each other out there. I'm not sure anyone will be standing come June. Wow.
