Robinson generated 10 points (5-10 FG, 0-1 3Pt, 0-2 FT) and 11 rebounds across 17 minutes during the Spurs' 80-72 loss to the Hawks in a Las Vegas Summer League consolation game Friday.
ANALYSIS
Robinson capped off his stint in the desert with a solid showing, and his rebounding total paced the Spurs for the night. The veteran big man acquitted himself well during his relatively limited allotment of playing time in Las Vegas, averaging 8.3 points and 6.8 rebounds across 14.0 minutes over four games, a body of work preceded by 11.3 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists in 17.0 minutes per three Salt Lake City League tilts. The 28-year-old will hope to parlay the solid body of work overall into a training camp invite at minimum.

It once looked as though Robinson, the No. 5 overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft, would wash out of the league after largely unsuccessful stints with the Kings, Rockets, Trail Blazers and 76ers, but he provided some signs of optimism about his future while excelling with the Nets down the stretch last season. After seeing only light minutes for the bulk of the campaign while backing up Brook Lopez and Thaddeus Young in the frontcourt, Robinson took off when both Young and Robinson were shut down for rest purposes in early April. In seven total starts, Robinson averaged 14.6 points (on 54.4% shooting) and 12.3 rebounds over 28.3 minutes per game, racking up six double-doubles in those outings. While the production comes with the caveat that Robinson had little competition for minutes and touches while playing for one of the league's worst teams, his efficiency was impressive nonetheless. Given his meager track record prior to the outburst, teams understandably weren't interested in investing significant money in Robinson in free agency, so he was forced to wait until September before inking a one-year deal with the Lakers. He's again slated to serve in a reserve role, this time behind projected starters Timofey Mozgov and Julius Randle. That arrangement will likely limit Robinson's minutes and appeal in most leagues, but he'll attract interest in both season-long and DFS formats if he enters the starting five due to injury at any point during the season.
After bouncing around the league in his first three seasons in the NBA, Robinson signed a two-year deal with the Nets in July. His one discernible skill in the NBA is volume rebounding, but Robinson is limited in pretty much every other facet of the game. He began last season playing for the Trail Blazers before getting traded to the Sixers, where he finished the season playing 22 games off the bench, averaging 8.8 points, 7.7 rebounds. 1.1 assists, 0.7 steals, and 0.4 blocks in 19 minutes per game while shooting 52 percent from the field (on 2.8 attempts per game) and 44 percent from the line. Robinson underwent surgery to repair a slight tear in the meniscus of his left knee in the middle of July. The Nets have Brook Lopez and Thaddeus Young starting in the frontcourt, and Joe Johnson will likely see time at power forward in small-ball lineups, leaving less time in the big-man rotation for Robinson off the bench. If the Nets fall prey to injuries, Robinson could be a decent contributor in rebounds, but with his value largely tied to his contributions in that singular category, his prospects in fantasy for the 2015-16 season look tepid at best.
In his second NBA season, and first with the Blazers, Thomas Robinson's propensity to stop the ball kept his workload in check, but he still managed to take the floor on 70 occasions, recording 4.8 points (on 48-percent shooting) and 4.4 rebounds in 13 minutes. His offseason workouts at the team's practice facility have included training him to make a prompt decision upon catching the ball, with the prudent calls being to shoot or pass instead of holding it. If he can master, or at least become proficient in developing his basketball IQ in coach Terry Stotts' "flow" offense, Robinson should be in line to experience a bump in playing time. In an unfortunate turn of events, Robinson's stay in the Las Vegas Summer League was abbreviated due to a torn ligament in his right thumb, which required surgery. A full recovery is expected by training camp, and he'll be given the chance to stake his claim as LaMarcus Aldridge's primary reserve.
The Kings took Robinson with the fifth pick in this offseason’s draft and many projected him starting for the Kings this upcoming season. Management must have felt Robinson wasn’t ready to handle that role as they re-signed veteran forward Jason Thompson to a multi-year deal, pushing Robinson to a backup role for his rookie campaign. At 6-10, Robinson is classified as a power forward with a “high motor.” His ability to grab boards will likely translate instantly at the pro level and the offense will eventually catch up with him as well. His senior year shooting percentages (50.5 shooting percentage, 68.2 free throw percentage) are right around the league averages for big men. His playing time will likely be capped around 20 minutes to start the season, but if Robinson impresses right off the bat, he may find himself with a larger role as the season progresses.
