ANALYSIS
A 2008 first-round selection of the Jazz, Koufos spent 11 seasons in the NBA before spending the past two seasons overseas with a pair of EuroLeague clubs. The 32-year-old big man will now return stateside to join the Ignite squad, seemingly hopeful that a strong showing in the G League will result in another opportunity at the NBA level. Koufos owns career averages of 5.7 points and 5.0 rebounds in 16.4 minutes per game over 686 regular-season appearances in the NBA.

Eyeing NBA return
CFree Agent
November 23, 2020
Koufos is back in the U.S. and is eyeing an NBA return, according to John Hollinger of The Athletic.
ANALYSIS
Koufos is back stateside after playing for CSKA Moscow a year ago, and the veteran big man wants to play in the NBA next season. He's not expected to draw heavy interest, however, and it's possible that Koufos would have to settle for a one-year deal for the veteran's minimum in order to prove he can still play in The Association. He averaged 3.7 points with 4.2 rebounds in his last season in the league when he featured for the Kings in 2018-19.

Playing in his third season with Sacramento, Koufos played nearly the exact same role in 2017-18 as he did in 2016-17. He was a veteran mentor to some of the younger bigs on the roster, while also providing a reliable reserve in the frontcourt. Koufos finished the campaign averaging 6.7 points, 6.6 rebounds and 1.2 assists across 19.6 minutes, while shooting 57.1 percent from the field. Looking ahead to the upcoming season, Koufos should be slated for a similar workload once again in the final year of his contract. He should slot in behind both Willie Cauley-Stein and Zach Randolph, while Harry Giles could also see time at the center position as well, which further complicates Koufos' path to significant minutes. That should limit the veteran's contributions to just deeper leagues, where he would likely be nothing more than a rebounds specialist.
Koufos has seen his role remain stagnant on the Kings over the past two seasons, even after the team dealt starting center DeMarcus Cousins to the Pelicans at the trade deadline of the 2016-17 campaign. The 28-year-old center saw a solid workload as a reserve last year, posting 6.6 points and 5.7 boards across 20.0 minutes per game while shooting 55.1 percent from the field. Despite his subpar workload, Koufos does have fringe double-double potential, collecting 19 games with at least 10 points and nine games with at least 10 boards last season. It seems possible that he’ll see a similar -- though likely lesser --workload heading into next season when considering the emergence of Willie Cauley-Stein and other frontcourt depth, such as Zach Randolph, Georgios Papagiannis, Skal Labissiere and Harry Giles. For that reason, Koufos can probably be safely ignored in the majority of Fantasy formats, as his role with Sacramento is relatively fluid and somewhat in jeopardy.
Koufos, a favorite of coach George Karl’s from their time together in Denver, signed a four-year, $32.8 million contract with the Kings last offseason to reunite with his former bench boss. During his first year in Sacramento, Koufos essentially served as the Kings’ third big man behind DeMarcus Cousins and Willie Cauley-Stein, posting averages of 6.8 points (on 53.2% shooting), 5.4 rebounds and 0.9 blocks in 19.0 minutes per game across 78 appearances (14 starts). The 27-year-old’s outputs often weren’t eye-opening, but his ability to hold his own as a rebounder and hit more than half of his shots made him an adequate rotation option. Though Karl was let go after the season, Koufos is fortunate to have some existing familiarity with new coach Dave Joerger, who he played under in Memphis. That should help Koufos’ case for remaining a mainstay in the rotation early in the year, though he could lose minutes to first-round rookies Georgios Papagiannis and Skal Labissiere as the season wears on.
The 26-year-old Koufos is entering his eighth season in the NBA. He averaged 17 minutes, 5.2 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 0.8 blocks while shooting 51 percent from the field and 65 percent from the line last season for the Grizzlies. His main strength is his ability to rebound and provide solid effort as a post defender. His primary weakness remains his limited mobility and lack of offensive output as a post scorer. Koufos signed a four-year, $33 million deal with Sacramento in the offseason and has familiarity with head coach George Karl from his days as a Nugget, so Koufos may be able to hold off rookie Willie Cauley-Stein as the starting center to begin the season. Koufos' lack of overall upside should eventually give way to the talented rookie and place Koufos as the primary backup center, similar to his role in Memphis, but considering that Karl started Koufos at center over JaVale McGee in Denver, the parallels can't be ignored.
Koufos is entering his seventh season in the NBA. Last season, he averaged 6.4 points, 5.2 rebounds, 0.5 assists, 0.9 blocks, and 0.4 steals in 17 minutes per game through 80 games. He shot 50 percent from the field on 5.7 attempts per game and 65 percent from the free-throw line on 1.2 attempts per game. In seven playoff games, he averaged 2.6 points, 2.1 rebounds, 0.3 assists, 0.4 blocks, and 0.3 steals in six minutes per game. The Grizzlies elected to guarantee his contract for this season, and while they did draft Jarnell Stokes in the second round to fill the void left by Ed Davis' departure, Koufos still figures to see the most consistent playing time among the reserve big men. Mike Conley and Zach Randolph both produced more in the absence of the injured Marc Gasol, but Koufos was the biggest beneficiary. In 22 starts last season while Gasol was sidelined, Koufos averaged 8.8 points, 8.5 rebounds, 0.6 assists, 1.2 blocks, and 0.5 steals in 24 minutes per game while shooting 46 percent from the field on 8.3 attempts per game and 71 percent from the free-throw line on 1.6 attempts per game. The Grizzlies don't have a third true center on the roster, but due to Gasol playing big minutes, Koufos is unlikely to be much of a factor outside of the deepest leagues unless the Grizzlies suffer injuries to their frontcourt.
Koufos enjoyed the best season of his five-year NBA career in 2012-13, playing a season-high 22.4 minutes and averaging 8.0 points, 6.9 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game. His numbers improved each of the last three years in Denver. However, he won't get a chance to make it a fourth straight year. In Memphis, he'll back up Marc Gasol and will struggle to crack the 15-minute mark most nights. And that will be fine for the Grizzlies and their passionate fan base. As long as the drop off from Gasol, the NBA's Defensive Player of the Year last season, isn't too great, Koufos will be viewed as a success.
The young Greek 7-footer saw plenty of action in 2011-12 when injuries hit the Nuggets’ front court, and he responded by averaging career highs of 5.5 points and 5.4 rebounds over 48 games. He’ll provide the Nuggets with quality depth should McGee or Mozgov suffer injury or foul-related problems.
The team is high on him. He posted 4.6 ppg and 3.0 rpg in just eight mpg through 11 games last year. Based on that small body of work, he could get minutes instead of Harrington. However, he's still unlikely to have much fantasy value this season.
He was an afterthought in the Al Jefferson trade, but it looks like he may carve out a backup center and power forward role. However, it's unlikely he'll get enough minutes for viable fantasy value in most leagues.
Koufos is a young player with size but is still developing an NBA game. As a rookie, he showed that he is capable of stepping in and maintaining quality center play for double-digit minutes but averaged just under five points and three rebounds a game.
Koufos came out after his freshman year at Ohio State, but really needed more seasoning before entering the NBA. He’s got a nice finesse game at center, but needs to develop more variety in close and doesn’t have a power post game. He’ll need to learn that part of the game in the D-League, which is where he’ll be calling home this year.
