Hurtubise, an undrafted free agent out of the United States Military Academy (West Point), was added to the 40-man roster during the offseason after slashing .330/.479/.483 in stops at Double-A Chattanooga (159 +wRC) and Triple-A Louisville (172). He doesn't carry a prospect's pedigree, and an inflated BABIP should come back to earth, but the Army grad showed superlative plate discipline (16.9 BB%, 13.8 K%) and on-base ability to capitalize on his speed (45 steals). There's a crowd in the Reds' outfield, where the team would like to have a right-handed bat, so it's likely the lefty-batting Hurtubise opens at Louisville with a chance to reach the majors in 2024. Hurtubise and Bubba Thompson, both of whom were reassigned to minor-league camp earlier this spring, are the most likely candidates for the 26th spot after the organization trimmed its roster Friday. They will travel with the team when camp breaks and participate in intrasquad scrimmages scheduled before Thursday's Opening Day matchup against Washington. The two are currently on the 40-man roster and fill an area of need in the outfield, although the club could also wait to see which players are cut from other teams.
