2024 Fantasy Outlook
He plays more than most backup catchers because he's more productive offensively than most of the other major leaguers who occupy that role, but d'Arnaud is firmly positioned as the No. 2 option in Atlanta behind Sean Murphy. The same Sean Murphy who was signed last winter to a six-year, $73 million contract extension with a $15 million club option for 2029. In theory, d'Arnaud would make sense as an option for the designated hitter role, or at least a share of it, but he drew only six starts out of the DH spot in 2023 and simply doesn't have the juice to knock Marcell Ozuna from his full-time DH perch. The same Marcell Ozuna who's coming off a career-high 40 home runs. It's worth keeping d'Arnaud on a waiver-wire watch list, but he'll need injuries on the depth chart above him to take on one-catcher, mixed-league fantasy appeal in 2024. Read Past Outlooks

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Run as starter might get extended
Sean Murphy has yet to resume swinging a bat since suffering an oblique strain March 29, per Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, which positions d'Arnaud for a potentially lengthy run as Atlanta's primary catcher.
ANALYSIS
Manager Brian Snitker said Murphy won't return to swinging until he's fully clear of symptoms, and it's unclear when that may be. D'Arnaud is serving as Atlanta's primary catcher in the meantime, and it appears he'll retain the job for at least the next couple weeks. The 35-year-old is off to a bit of a slow start, having gone 2-for-10 with two doubles, two RBI and three runs through five games.

Some eyebrows were raised when Atlanta gave d'Arnaud a two-year deal after his disappointing 2021 season at the plate, but he rewarded the club with their faith in him with a strong rebound season in 2022 as the club found a way to mix and match his strengths with William Contreras. d'Arnaud used a more aggressive approach at the plate in 2022 looking to hunt early and often for fastballs and he hit .274 while slugging .512 off heaters with 12 of his 18 home runs on the season coming off the 2021 season where he hit .193 and slugged .377 against fastballs. Despite producing like one, d'Arnaud has never been an everyday catcher as he has but twice exceeded 400 plate appearances but yet has five double-digit homer seasons to his name and just scored a career-high 61 runs this past season. Simply put, he makes the most of his opportunities and his 2022 production even exceeded what he did in 2019 when he re-established his market value with a livelier baseball. He should lose more at-bats with the trade that sent out Contreras and brought in Sean Murphy, although d'Arnaud is expected to be the designated hitter sometimes when Murphy starts at catcher.
