2024 Fantasy Outlook
Herrera took a big step forward last season at Triple-A Memphis, sporting a .291/.451/.500 batting line with 10 home runs and 11 stolen bases. He was also very productive during his brief time in the majors, slashing .297/.409/.351 with a 61.5 percent hard-hit rate in 13 contests. Herrera's strike-zone discipline has long been a strength, and he took it to another level in 2023 at Memphis with a 20 percent walk rate and 20.5 percent strikeout rate. His power hasn't fully unlocked to this point, due in large part to a bloated groundball rate, but given that he's still just 23 that part of his game might still grow. With Andrew Knizner non-tendered, Herrera is in line to serve as Willson Contreras' understudy in 2024. It's a role which garnered 63 starts and 241 plate appearances for Knizner last season, and a similar workload for Herrera seems likely. That's not enough playing time for Herrera to be very fantasy relevant, but he would have some upside if pushed into more responsibilities. Read Past Outlooks

Will continue to get regular reps
CSt. Louis Cardinals
April 11, 2024
The Cardinals will look to continue giving Herrera consistent playing time even after Willson Contreras (hand) is available to catch, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Contreras hopes to be able to catch this weekend in Arizona after missing four games and then being limited to designated hitter duty in the last two contests. With Lars Nootbaar (ribs) also due back Friday, it creates a bit of a playing time logjam for the Cards. Herrera, though, has earned regular reps, putting up an .875 OPS with three homers and seven RBI in nine games. The 23-year-old should continue to be worth using as a second fantasy catcher as long as he's getting at-bats.

Set for more at-bats?
CSt. Louis Cardinals
April 24, 2024
Herrera, who is starting behind the plate Wednesday against the Diamondbacks, could see more playing time after the Cardinals optioned Jordan Walker to Triple-A Memphis.
ANALYSIS
Herrera has had a semi-regular place in the lineup since Willson Contreras returned from a four-game absence due to a hand injury, but that may evolve into a more consistent spot following Walker's demotion. Herrera got off to a hot start with an .856 OPS in his first 34 at-bats of the season, but he's just 1-for-14 with three walks and seven strikeouts in his past six games. Despite the current slump, the 23-year-old should now see more time between catcher and designated hitter.

2023 Fantasy Outlook
Herrera's developmental schedule was stalled over the winter once St. Louis inked Willson Contreras to a long-term deal in late November. Herrera is likely scheduled to get back to Triple-A unless he beats out Andrew Knizner in the spring. Herrera has much more upside than Knizner, but the addition of Contreras allows the Cardinals to give Herrera some more seasoning in Memphis because he should be getting more than 1-2 games a week than he would get in St. Louis as long as Contreras is healthy. Simply put, Herrera's immediate future is a bit less exciting as long as he remains in St. Louis as long as Contreras is healthy.
