Torres was given his unconditional release Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Once an intriguing prospect who headlined the Cardinals' return from Cleveland in the 2018 Oscar Mercado trade, Torres never had sustained success above rookie ball. His value peaked around the time of the trade -- he slashed .321/.409/.525 with eight home runs in 44 games across multiple rookie levels as an 18-year-old in 2018.

Could be traded
OFSt. Louis Cardinals
January 30, 2021
Torres could be traded from the Cardinals to the Rockies in exchange for Nolan Arenado, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The trade between St. Louis and Colorado still hasn't been finalized, but Torres has been mentioned as a player that could be on the move. The 20-year-old has yet to appear above the Low-A level during his first two seasons in the minors but could continue his development within the Rockies' organization.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2020
2019
The Cardinals gave Torres a bit of a challenge, assigning him to the Midwest League once the weather heated up in May (he finished 2018 in the Gulf Coast League). He failed that challenge (36 wRC+, 38.7 K%), and took a life raft to the Appalachian League in June, where he raked for the final three months (149 wRC+, .241 ISO, 14.3 BB%). The 6-foot-4 Colombian slugger was the headliner in the Cardinals' return for Oscar Mercado in the 2018 deadline deal with Cleveland. While Mercado has blossomed into an everyday player, he may not have been given that chance in St. Louis. From the Cardinals' perspective, the trade was about Torres' ceiling and freeing up a 40-man roster spot. Cleanup-hitting upside is still very apparent, but Torres' height and long levers will always lead to some swing and miss, so keeping that in check as he climbs the ladder will be paramount.
The Cardinals cleared a 40-man spot and acquired one of the best young right-field prospects in baseball when they sent Oscar Mercado to Cleveland in exchange for Torres and a lesser prospect. It quickly looked like a brilliant deal for St. Louis, as the 6-foot-4, 200-pound slugger hit .397/.493/.683 with four home runs and a 13:8 K:BB in 75 PA in the GCL after the trade. He will always crush lefties, but the focus will be on continuing to hold his own against same-handed pitchers. Torres should continue to add good weight in the coming years, and while he is not an up-the-middle player, he is a good athlete with an electric swing that should generate power to all fields. As a prototypical right fielder, there will be a lot of pressure on his bat as he moves up the ladder, but he has the tools and the makeup to reach those lofty benchmarks. He turns 19 in March and should be challenged with an assignment to the Midwest League.
