Adams has been reassigned to White Sox minor league camp.
ANALYSIS
The impending 21-year-old, a second-round pick in the 2014 draft, stumbled while adapting to the elevated level of play at Double-A Birmingham last year (3.90 ERA in nine starts) and didn't do well when he ended up at High-A Winston-Salem (4.01 ERA in 18 outings) either. Of course, Adams' youth will afford him plenty of time to work his way through the system.

A four-pitch hurler with polish well beyond his years, the 20-year-old Adams throws strikes but may not have the strikeout stuff to be a frontline rotation anchor. Adams posted a respectable 3.98 ERA between High-A and Double-A in 163 innings last season, walking just 31 batters in the process. However, Adams fanned only 100 batters over that span. The 6-foot-3 Adams still has time to fill out, and a few extra ticks on the radar gun could do wonders for his strikeout numbers. As of right now, he is a little too hittable. He'll likely advance to the Double-A level early on in 2017.
Chicago's second-round pick from the 2014 draft pitched like a first-round talent in his first full season as a pro. He had a sub-3.00 ERA and a minuscule 3.2 percent walk rate in a season that was split between Low-A and High-A. Control aside, he did not generate the strikeout totals that his repertoire — highlighted by a mid-90s fastball — should generate as he improves his secondary pitches and his sequencing. Considering how aggressive the White Sox can sometimes be with their top arms, it would not be surprising for Adams to spend most of his age-20 season at Double-A, with the potential to reach the majors as a 21-year-old in 2017.
The White Sox drafted Adams out of high school in the second round of the 2014 draft and were able to sign him away from his home-state University of Georgia. He struck out 59 and walked four in 41.2 innings of rookie-level ball in 2014, and the strikeout totals should continue as he makes his way up the system if he can develop his secondary offerings. The right-hander is still fairly raw and will likely spend the 2015 season in the low minors.
