Almonte received his first taste of the big leagues back in 2015. He has yet to establish himself at the major-league level, throwing just 10.2 innings over the last three years. He missed the tail end of last season with a strained rotator cuff but appears to be healthy this spring. He’ll likely open at Triple-A Omaha, where he’s thrown 114.2 innings with a 4.87 ERA over parts of the last three seasons. He owns a 9.0 K/9 at the highest level of the minors but a 5.0 BB/9, a number which suggests he may not be able to remain a starting pitcher. His stuff could play up in the bullpen and his control issues could be less of a problem. For now, though, the Royals are likely to keep developing him as a starter. If he makes some major-league starts this year, his pitcher-friendly home park could make him a decent streaming option in deeper leagues, as he’s likely to strike out a decent number of batters even if his ERA is high.
The 2016 season was a disappointing one for Almonte, who began the year with Triple-A but he was transferred to Double-A Northwest Arkansas in August. As a starter with Triple-A Omaha, he started 12 games, finishing with a 5.55 ERA and 1.75 WHIP. Things didn't get better with the step down to Double-A, either, as he posted a 7.31 ERA and 1.75 WHIP in 16 innings pitched out of the bullpen. When he's on, his fastball and changeup are effective, but he has had recent issues with walks, which makes for a dangerous combination with the high batting average against him on balls in play, which was .341 in Triple-A and .399 after the transfer to Double-A. The Royals had previously viewed him as a top starting pitching prospect, but after 2016, they may be looking to shift him into a new role as a bullpen arm.
Despite lackluster stints with Double-A and Triple-A, Almonte was nevertheless rewarded with a promotion to the big league bullpen in September. He gave up six runs and issued seven walks in 8.2 innings of relief for the Royals down the stretch, but that should hardly factor into his evaluation heading into 2016. Almonte is still being developed as a starting pitcher for the Royals long term. With that in mind, he will presumably start the upcoming season with Triple-A Omaha, where he posted a 4.88 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 36 strikeouts in 27.2 innings over six starts last season. Almonte possesses three plus pitches — fastball, curveball, changeup — when he is going right, and his success from one outing to the next directly hinges on the command of his fastball. If he can demonstrate more consistency with that command in 2016, he could join the Royals rotation at some point in the first half.
Almonte's 2014 campaign started out fast, as the 20-year-old was able to fan 21 batters in 20.2 innings over his first four starts at High-A Wilmington. However, the Royals' aggressive approach with his development may have came back to haunt them, as the pitching prospect ran into troubles with elbow tenderness in June. After returning, he allowed 12 earned runs over his next 19.1 innings, and finished the season with a 4.49 ERA. Kansas City may choose to pump the brakes a bit on his development and have him start the season at High-A Wilmington again, but if he's able to avoid the injury bug and pitch well, he could conceivably be with Northwest Arkansas by the end of the season. Almonte's strikeout ability and high ceiling make him an intriguing player to own in keeper formats, though he likely won't see MLB time for another season or two.
While a move to full-season ball in 2013 seemed to be a bit of an aggressive approach, the 20-year old Almonte proved his mettle by throwing 130.2 innings while maintaining a solid 3.67 K/BB. He posted an ERA just above 5.00 during his first month at Low-A Lexington but settled down to the point where he never saw his ERA rise above 3.30 for any other month, finishing the season with a 3.10 ERA and an even more impressive 2.76 FIP. The Royals like what they've seen so far -- especially the 9.1 K/9 last year -- so expect them to continue to be aggressive with his development and start him off at High-A Wilmington in 2014.
