2013
Herrera was thrust into a larger role than expected in 2015 due to the early-season demotion of Scooter Gennett and the trade of Aramis Ramirez in July. Herrera didn't overwhelm anyone at the plate, batting a mere .242, although he did surprise many with seven home runs and 33 RBI. Herrera's ability to play third base, second base, and outfield will help his case for occasional playing time, and he should remain a bench utility option throughout his time in a big league uniform. The Dodgers signed Herrera in December, and he'll compete for a reserve role during spring training.
The Brewers plucked Herrera off waivers last offseason, and after opening the campaign with Triple-A Nashville, he ended up spending much of the season as a utility player for the big league club. Herrera does not hit much, but he has decent speed and can play both shortstop and center field. That combination of skills, plus his respectable showing in 2014, will help as he attempts to secure a utility role with the Brewers during spring training.
Herrera failed to carry over his 2012 momentum into 2013, after he was a nice surprise (.340 OBP) in 67 games. Last year, Herrera spent all but four games in Triple-A Albuquerque where he hit .282/.367/.370. He was claimed off waivers by the Brewers this winter and will battle for a spot on the bench this spring. His versatility in the field and ability to swipe a few bases (16 in 2013) could give him some deep NL-only value if things break his way.
Herrera was a nice surprise for the Dodgers last year, making his big league debut at age 27 while playing six positions and batting .251/.340/.332 in 187 at-bats. Herrera though lacks much in the way of power and he's not a speed guy. Combine that with his hitting just .228 after May 31, and you have a glove-first utility guy who will have to battle for a roster spot this spring.
