ANALYSIS
The right-hander hasn't pitched in the majors since 2017, when he registered an 8.16 ERA across 14.1 innings with the Reds. Buchanan has never been much of a strikeout pitcher and figures to serve as organizational depth for Los Angeles. He'll begin his stint with the club at the Triple-A level.

Past Fantasy Outlooks

Called upon for a spot start in late September, Buchanan earned a win over the Reds that may have nudged some deep league rotisserie players toward a league championship. Most likely, his contributions to the Cubs were ignored, as they largely took place at Triple-A Iowa last season. Buchanan took the ball 24 times at Triple-A -- including 22 starts -- and posted a 4.34 ERA and 1.36 WHIP while chewing up innings and serving as organizational depth. On a positive note, he kept the ball in the park in the Pacific Coast League, which is no easy feat. It remains to be seen if Buchanan will maintain a 40-man roster spot through the entire offseason, but if he remains in the Cubs' organization, he's likely to be merely a long-relief option.
After showing moderate success as a starter in the minors, Buchanan was called up to make his major league debut in a spot start last June. The 25-year-old right-hander was roughed up during the loss, however, and was subsequently demoted to the minors a week later. He returned in July to serve as the Astros' long man out of the bullpen, and in 17 total appearances (two starts), he went 1-3 with a 4.58 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 20:12 K:BB in 35.1 innings. An eighth-round pick of Houston in the 2010 draft, Buchanan doesn't miss many bats (5.5 K/9 in the minors), but he has good control (1.8 BB/9) and got a significant number of his big league outs on the ground (4.24 GB/FB). A return to the long-man role appears likely provided that he pitches well this spring.
