Elects to retire
1BColorado Rockies
July 20, 2020
Rockies general manager Jeff Bridich said Friday that Mundell informed the organization that he will retire from professional baseball, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The Rockies placed Mundell on the restricted list the same day, which officially removed him from the 40-man roster. If Mundell elects to unretire at some point, the Rockies would maintain his rights. The 26-year-old had yet to make his MLB debut but earned an invitation to summer camp after slashing .333/.399/.521 over 435 plate appearances at Triple-A Albuquerque in 2019.

2017 Fantasy Outlook
There is not enough upside or performance at an age-appropriate level for Mundell to be targeted heavily heading into 2017, but he did enough last year to be squarely on the radar in deeper dynasty leagues. A 22-year-old first baseman playing half his games in Low-A Asheville should be expected to dominate at the plate, and Mundell did just that, posting a 152 wRC+, 9.2 percent walk rate and 13.6 percent strikeout rate. Taking advantage of hitter-friendly conditions is a time-honored tradition for Rockies prospects, and Mundell figures to post even more impressive numbers at Lancaster in 2017. His minor league numbers will overstate his big league potential in the coming years, which opens up an opportunity to sell high in leagues with less seasoned owners. The big question is whether he can hit for enough power to succeed as a rare right-handed first baseman. His ceiling is that of a .285 hitter with 20-homer pop and a few Coors-induced .300 seasons mixed in.
