Perez signed a minor-league contract with the Cardinals on Monday that includes an invitation to major-league spring training.
ANALYSIS
The 27-year-old wasn't able to find a landing spot until June, when the Mariners signed him to a minor-league deal. However, his patience paid off, as he produced a 2.28 ERA in 13 starts at Double-A Arkansas and a 3.15 ERA in four starts for Triple-A Tacoma. Perez has major-league experience as a starter, though with a crowded rotation battle on tap for spring training, his best bet to make the big-league team may be as a long reliever.

Perez beat out John Gant in spring training to earn the fifth spot in the Braves' starting rotation but wasn't able to hold onto it for long. The young righty was demoted to Triple-A Gwinnett after posting a 5.11 ERA and 6:8 K:BB through his first three starts with the club. After three solid starts at Triple-A (including a complete game one-hitter), Perez was recalled to the majors, where he rejoined the Braves' rotation following Jhoulys Chacin's departure to the Angels. He only made eight more starts over the remainder of the season, as he was plagued with a rotator cuff strain that caused him to miss nearly three months and ended up finishing the year on the shelf with an elbow impingement. His final season stats are less than stellar, as he finished with a measly 11.6 percent strikeout percentage over 53.2 innings. One bright spot was his impressive 6.4 percent walk rate. He was released by the Braves in the offseason, which may speak to the severity of the elbow issue. He did latch on with the Cubs shortly thereafter, though, but he likely projects as an organizational depth piece until he proves his elbow is 100 percent.
Nothing about Perez's 2015 campaign or skill set is going to wow you, but he pitched well enough down the stretch to stake claim to a back-end rotation spot heading into this season. The 24-year-old right-hander turned in a paltry 4.3% K-BB% and gave up a lot of medium and hard contact, inducing swings and misses at just a 6.1% clip. His saving grace was the groundball, as more than half of the balls in play against Perez were on the ground, but the peripherals suggest there is little room for growth. He uses a curveball and changeup to work off a low-90s fastball, and is not a player that will be a long-term fixture in the rotation, but Perez can eat innings for the rebuilding Braves until some of the more electric young arms force their way to the majors.
You won't find Perez's name on many lists of Braves top prospects, but the 23-year-old's star is on the rise following a strong season at Double-A Mississippi. Perez went 7-6 with a 2.91 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and just four home runs allowed in 26 appearances (25 starts) spanning 133 innings. His strikeout rate fell from 7.6 K/9 with Low-A Rome and High-A Lynchburg in 2013 to a career-low 6.4 K/9, but he maintained a walk rate of 2.6 BB/9 as well as a GO/AO rate above 1.80. Still, the low home run total seems fluky, and his .283 BABIP was also a career low, but Perez's 3.29 FIP suggests he only slightly overachieved last season. With J.R. Graham plucked by Minnesota in the Rule 5 draft, Perez is left among the closest in the Braves' system in terms of proximity to the majors, though he may have to prove himself at Triple-A Gwinett for a large portion of 2015 and his modest strikeout rates could prevent him from being anything more than a back-end rotation option long-term.
