Debuts for Double-A club
PKansas City Royals
July 3, 2022
Skoglund was activated from the 7-day injured list Tuesday and gave up two earned runs on four hits while striking out one over 1.1 innings Friday in his first appearance for Double-A Northwest Arkansas.
ANALYSIS
Skoglund opened the season on Triple-A Omaha's injured list, but he was assigned to Double-A at the conclusion of his rehab assignment, which included stops in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League and High-A Quad Cities. Given how poorly he fared in his Double-A debut, Skoglund will likely need to string together several quality outings for Northwest Arkansas before moving up to Triple-A.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2019
2018
Skoglund made 13 starts and one relief appearance for the Royals last season but did little to impress, finishing with a 5.14 ERA and 16.7 K%. It's possible his struggles were injury-related, as he was battling elbow soreness early in the season and was shut down for over three months after being diagnosed with a UCL sprain. He did return for four starts in September, easing concerns about the elbow at least somewhat. Standing tall at 6-foot-7 with a funky delivery, Skoglund has to rely primarily on deception against big-league hitters as both his stuff and command are unremarkable. He'll enter camp in a battle for the Royals' fifth starter spot, but he's unlikely to be a particularly appealing option should he win the job, as his career ERA through 88 innings sits at 6.03 and his 4.13 mark at the Triple-A level doesn't suggest a dramatic improvement is coming.
Skoglund received his first taste of the majors in 2017, struggling to a 9.50 ERA in 18 innings of work. He walked far too many batters (12.9 percent), struck out far too few (15.1 percent) and didn’t generate many groundballs (36.4 percent). In 19 starts for Triple-A Omaha, the 25-year-old fared far better, striking out 23.3 percent of batters faced while walking just 6.6 percent en route to a 4.11 ERA. Skoglund features a fastball in the low 90s and three mediocre offspeed pitchers -- very much a back-end starter profile. That might be enough to earn him a handful of starts again this season for a Royals’ team which lacks much starting depth. As a 6-foot-7 lefty, there may be more to dream on than for other players with similar statistical profiles, but it would be a surprise to see Skoglund have a major fantasy impact this season.
