PSeattle Mariners  AAA
March 21, 2022
Albers agreed to a minor-league contract with the Mariners on Monday, Shannon Drayer of 710 ESPN Seattle reports.
ANALYSIS
Drayer notes that Albers was present Monday at the organization's big-league camp, so he looks as though he'll have a chance to compete for a spot in the Opening Day rotation or in the bullpen as a long man. The 36-year-old lefty made five appearances (three starts) for Minnesota in 2021, turning in a 7.58 ERA, 1.74 WHIP and 12:9 K:BB across 19 frames.

Earning rotation spot?
PMinnesota Twins  AAA
August 28, 2021
Albers could continue starting games for the Twins after throwing 5.1 scoreless innings in Friday's start against Milwaukee.
ANALYSIS
The 35-year-old has impressed in his first big-league action since 2017, allowing one run on five hits in 9.1 innings since joining the Twins on Aug. 19. Averaging 89 mph on his fastball, Albers isn't going to blow hitters away, but he's displayed solid command and an ability to navigate good lineups in the Yankees and Brewers. The absences of Michael Pineda (oblique), Kenta Maeda (forearm) and Lewis Thorpe (shoulder) have created a hole in the rotation, and Albers has done well enough filling it that he may continue starting games even after Pineda and Thorpe return from the injured list.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2017
2014
Albers managed a solid 3.69 ERA with a shaky 1.45 WHIP in 21 starts for Triple-A Rochester last season, earning him his first starts in the majors since 2013 when the Twins were desperate for pitching late in the season. Albers' unusual delivery can fool hitters, but his lack of velocity (87.2 mph fastball average) severely limits his upside. He's likely just going to provide depth at Triple-A.
Albers was a late bloomer who got called up last August and began his career with two great starts before coming back down to earth. The lefty previously pitched in independent ball before signing with the Twins in 2011, becoming a productive reliever at High-A and Double-A. He moved into the rotation at Triple-A in 2013 and thrived with a 2.86 ERA and 116:32 K:BB ratio in 132.1 innings. Albers was called up to the majors in August with the Twins desperate for starters, coming within two outs of a shutout in his first start and delivering a two-hit shutout in his second turn. It was all downhill thereafter, as Albers went 0-5 with a 5.75 ERA and 4.3 K/9 in his next eight starts. Albers' unusual delivery may have fooled hitters initially, but his lack of velocity (86.6 mph fastball average) eventually became a problem. He may have had a shot to win a role with the Twins again, but instead chose to sign with the Hanwha Eagles of the Korea Baseball Organization for 2014.
