Fuentes was sidelined for the first month and a half of the Pacific Coast League season after suffering a small fracture on one of the fingers on his left hand during spring training. Prior to sustaining the injury, the Diamondbacks removed Fuentes from their 40-man roster, so the veteran outfielder probably won't be a leading candidate for a promotion to the big leagues even if Steven Souza (pectoral) joins A.J. Pollock (thumb) on the 10-day disabled list.

Fuentes appeared in 64 games for Arizona last season, but he logged more plate appearances (192) over 45 games at Triple-A Reno. A first-round pick of the Red Sox in 2009, Fuentes has had a difficult time hitting enough in the upper levels of the minor leagues to earn more than the occasional taste of playing time at the MLB level. If he were to find a part-time role over a prolonged stretch, Fuentes' speed and efficiency as a basestealer could make him intriguing for those in deeper formats, as he went 17-for-19 on the basepaths between Reno and Arizona in 2017. Unfortunately, he was a very light-hitting backup outfielder last season, with a .235/.278/.338 line and a 24.1 percent strikeout rate against top-level pitching. At 27, Fuentes' best-case scenario might be holding down a role as a fifth outfielder in hopes of improving enough as a hitter to contribute in a pre-Seattle Jarrod Dyson-type role.

Beside a short stint in the major leagues without an at-bat, Fuentes spent almost all of 2015 with Triple-A Omaha. He produced solid numbers, highlighted by a .782 OPS with 29 stolen bases in 35 attempts. The 24-year-old also hit nine home runs and drove in 46 runs, both career-bests. Unfortunately for Fuentes, the Royals already have plenty of other options in the outfield for starting and reserve roles. However, if Fuentes continues this upward trend with his hitting and speed, the Royals may be able to make room for him at least as a bench player.

The Padres had Fuentes split his 2014 season between Double-A San Antonio and Triple-A El Paso, where he continued to show the plus-speed that once led the Red Sox to draft him 28th overall (2009). For a player with his speed, Fuentes is still somewhat unpolished as a center fielder, but he should be competent enough at the position to be a useful bench player if he's a finished product at age 24. After being traded to the Royals in November, Fuentes has a clearer organizational depth chart to climb, and the emphasis on the running game in Kansas City certainly doesn't hurt his chances of being a useful source of cheap stolen bases if he ends up on the 25-man roster at any point in 2015. With a career .346 OBP in the minor leagues -- including .349 and .386 marks at Double-A and Triple-A, respectively -- Fuentes may become the Royals' facsimile of Jarrod Dyson.

After experiencing his first cup of coffee with the big club in 2013, Fuentes is expected to man center field at Triple-A Tucson due to the presence of Cameron Maybin on the Padres. Fuentes has been a prime basestealer in the minors, swiping at least 35 in four consecutive seasons, but he made noise with his bat in 400 combined at-bats at Tucson and Double-A San Antonio, hitting .330 with improved plate discipline (51:81 K:BB ratio). If Maybin struggles to stay healthy, Fuentes could be given an opportunity to show what he can do at the big league level in 2014.

Fuentes was one of the prospects surrendered by the Red Sox in the Adrian Gonzalez deal and from a skills standpoint, he is first rate. With plus-plus speed, the 21-year-old has swiped 83 bases over the last two seasons in the minors and has done so with amazing efficiency -- an 82.2 percent success rate. His plate discipline is improving but could use some more work as he still strikes out a little too often and a .342 OBP in 2011 was a career high. He'll likely begin the season in Double-A this year and should definitely be on your radar in keeper and dynasty leagues.

Fuentes did nothing to dampen the promise he shows as a base stealer or defender in 2010, but he did little to improve his on-base rate (25 walks in 400 plate appearances). He's young and has time to develop a better approach at the plate, but that will be happening in the San Diego organization following his inclusion in the Red Sox's deal to land Adrian Gonzalez. All things consider, Fuentes is likely three years away from contributing at the major league level.

Fuentes, 18, is a speedy center-field prospect drafted in the first round of the 2009 draft by the Red Sox. He signed quickly and played in 40 games for the organization's Rookie-Level club in the Gulf Coast League, where he showcased his plus speed and good defensive skills. He doesn't have a lot of power, but is a gap hitter with line drive power and he makes excellent contact. Plate discipline is the major element lacking in his game, but he's with an organization that subscribes to that philosophy and will teach him more patience.
