Yahoo DFS Baseball: Thursday Picks

This article is part of our Yahoo DFS Baseball series.

Pitcher

Max Scherzer, WAS vs MIL ($63): The top pitching option on this slate is really a no-brainer. Scherzer has both the highest floor and the highest upside and he's got a great matchup with the Brewers. Milwaukee is a dangerous team to face, but the Brewers strike out at an extremely high rate and Scherzer is sure to take advantage of that. Scherzer has recorded nine or more strikeouts in 11 of his past 12 starts and he's likely to hit double digits against the Brewers.

Marcus Stroman, TOR vs OAK ($53): If there were any other good options on this slate, I certainly wouldn't pay $53 for Stroman, but the rest of the card is really that weak, which makes Stroman the best option behind Scherzer. Stroman has pitched well this season, that's not in question, but his K rate isn't that of someone that you'd generally pay more than $50 for. With that said, he's done a good job of limiting damage lately, allowing just four runs over his past five starts, so the risk with Stroman is very slight.

CATCHER

Willson Contreras, CHC vs CHW ($18): Contreras has been on a tear lately, with four home runs in his past six games, half of which have come against righties. He gets another righty in Mike Pelfrey, who hasn't been as bad as we've seen in the past this year, but he hasn't been great either. Contreras enters with a .332 wOBA against righties this season, which isn't elite, but it's improved like the rest of his numbers over the past week.

FIRST BASE

Justin Smoak, TOR vs OAK ($19): Though many of the Blue Jay hitters have underperformed this season, Smoak is surely one of the exceptions. Smoak has amassed 28 home runs this season and most of those have come against lefties. Smoak enters with a .486 wOBA against lefties this season, which is fifth in the majors. Lefty Sean Manaea takes the mound for the A's and while he's been decent this season, he's still far from elite.

SECOND BASE

Daniel Murphy, WAS vs MIL ($22): The Nationals as a team mash right-handed pitching, so you could really list just about anyone here, from Bryce Harper to Adam Lind, but with only eight games on this slate and Scooter Gennett facing a lefty, Murphy is clearly the top option at second base. Milwaukee sends Michael Blazek to the mound and he's likely in for a short outing as he's yet to pitch more than two innings in any appearance. With that in mind, Murphy will likely see a lot of the Brewer bullpen, which is usually a good thing.

THIRD BASE

Evan Longoria, TB vs NYY ($18): It's time for the batter vs. pitcher disclaimer, which reads something like -- I generally don't rely on batter vs. pitcher numbers, because both parties change over time, yada yada yada. That disclaimer is void whenever Longoria faces CC Sabathia as they've faced each other 90 times and Longoria holds a .545 wOBA against Sabathia. The only reason to ignore these lifetime numbers would be if Longoria was in a terrible way or Sabathia rediscovered his Cy Young form, which is not the case.

SHORTSTOP

Francisco Lindor, CLE vs LAA ($17): Lindor started the season very well, but he's been stuck in a holding pattern for much of the past couple months. With that said, he's started to turn it on again over the past couple weeks, amassing 17 hits in his past 10 games. Lindor has done more damage against lefties this season, but he gets a crack at a righty who has been vulnerable to lefties and Lindor should be able to take advantage. JC Ramirez takes the hill for the Angels and he brings a 4.38 ERA with him.

OUTFIELD

Adam Duvall, CIN at MIA ($17): With a lefty on the mound for the Marlins, I usually look to Zack Cozart, but it looks like Cozart will be on the shelf for this one, so I'm going to my next choice and that's Duvall. Duvall enters with a .402 wOBA against lefties this season, which trails only Cozart and Joey Votto among Reds hitters. Lefty Chris O'Grady enters with a 5.40 ERA for the Marlins.

Jon Jay, CHC at CHW ($9): As long as Jay keeps producing against righties, there's no reason to leave him out of the lineup. Hopefully Joe Maddon feels the same way as Jay is not an everyday player. Jay enters with a .345 wOBA against righties this season and he's been on base seven times in his past two starts. As mentioned earlier, Pelfrey takes the mound for the White Sox and unfortunately, he's not as reliably bad as he was last year, so a stack isn't a sure thing, but a couple targets on the Cubs isn't a bad idea.

Giancarlo Stanton, MIA at CIN ($23): At the beginning of the week, it was Jose Altuve that seemed unstoppable, now it's Stanton, who has taken over the league lead in home runs with 33. Stanton is one of the best in the majors against lefties this season, but he's also been very adept at hitting righties as well. Stanton enters with a .390 wOBA against righties this season. The Marlins face righty Robert Stephenson, who enters with a 8.10 ERA.
